Starplay:
BrentR: Nokia has a standard 12 month manufacturers warranty, Vodafone include a further 12 months on top of that, so 24 months in total.

Wow... Thats pretty good really.... 24 months... I know my phones get a little bit of abuse over the years...

You may need 24 months.

lyonrouge: Will the updated virtual keyboard work in a similar fashion to a BlueTooth keyboard?

By that do you mean that you will still see the application you're in while typing, for reference etc? As far as I can tell, yes. This makes it similar (if not the same) to the keyboard used in the Ovi Maps 3.06 public beta (which I definitely recommend downloading if you're interested in new features or what the keyboard will look like, as it's very stable and brings some great new features). The difference between this and the new software is that this will show up by default rather than the programmer having to use specific code to implement it.

Definitely note that new features will be coming to existing handsets so there is no downside to buying earlier rather than later. We now have an evolving software platform where backporting new features is not necessary meaning it will consistently be tweaked and improved to perfection based heavily on user feedback. Features such as the portrait QWERTY, split-screen keyboard, full Swype integration and much more are based on feedback that Nokia collect from blogs, comments and forums just like this.

Is it normal to have to push the headset into the jack really hard at the end and get a distint click noise? Like I mean REALLY hard?

Or is it just me?

Is there anyway to disable the backlight after x amount of seconds?

Going Menu -> Settings -> Phone -> Display and then changing the light time out... e.g 30 seconds doesnt actually time out the backlight... It just keeps going.

Only wanting to change it as it would save a bit of power.

That seems odd.  I know I have a different phone (5800XM) but the way you describe is exactly how it's done on my phone, and it works.  I have left mine set to the default time of 45 seconds and this works well for me.

There are some apps where you can over ride the timeout on the backlight, e.g. Ovi Maps, and Sports tracker are two, there may be others.  Perhaps you have an app like this running, or still running in the background.  Check to see what apps are running.  I'm not sure how you will do this on the N8 but on the Menu page on mine I choose "options" and then "show open apps".

Also when you open the Applications Menu you will see a small circular logo to the top right of the logo of any app that is running.

Otherwise make the change you want to the backlight time then re start the phone to see if that makes a difference.

The N8 has an AMOLED screen and therefore doesn't have a backlight. You can set the screensaver timeout instead to get the effect you're probably looking for.

Yes to seeing application while I'm typing, currently I get this feature in Opera Mini (portrait and landscape), however, the failure in Opera Mini is that when I'm using BlueTooth keyboard it is still presenting virtual keyboard, using the already limited real estate.

So the challenge (as with the previous smartphones I have been through) is supporting a BlueTooth keyboard (which the current N8 does very well) and virtual keyboard (which the N8 does not do well) inteligently and selectively. Compare for instance with Trophy which has an excellent virtual keyboard solution with auto-complete offering.

Yes, it has quite a distinct push to complete connection. "Really hard" I guess would be relative to your strength, although I only use BlueTooth headphones and only pushed a 3.5 headphone jack into it for this test. I would guess that it would ease up over time?

cdouble: I highly recommend installing Swype. It's in the Ovi store officially for the N8 now. It makes using the landscape keyboard much faster.

Thanks I'll download this along with the map beta listed above once I'm on WiFi again.

any mention in the January update of addressing the somewhat hit-and-miss nature of BlueTooth device reconnection?

I really love the conversations feature... It makes it really easy to track all of your different conversations at the same time... especially when you have HEAPS of work on around this time of year.

If I download the new maps (keen to do it now) will it just go over the top of the old maps? (i.e The old maps will be uninstalled and then the new one placed in its position?) - If that makes sence... Thanks

Is there any way to download apps from the Ovi Store to my N8 through my PC.

When looking at apps the only option is to be sent a link via SMS and I dont want to use too much airtime as I already have spent quite a it on data today already.

Thanks

Yes there is.  Go to this link and follow the instructions.

http://symbianworld.org/7581-tutorials-download-free-apps-from-ovi-store-directly-to-your-computer/

Basically you add the word "download" at the end to the character string in the address bar of your browser once you have selected the app you want.
