Cool, I've just got to take her for a visit to the service centre as my battery is dead and needs replacing (not charging anymore)

gkjb: I'm not sure about all of the apps that were previously pre-installed but QuickOffice was bundled with Belle when I upgraded.

There were OpenOffice and Adobe PDF .sis files available from the Anna release on Nokia Forums somewhere. I might even have them lying around somewhere if you found you needed them.

Thanks for that info.

It would appear then that the upgrade includes all or at least most of the pre installed stuff which is what you might expect I guess.  When I have an hour or two of free time in the next few days I'll do the upgrade.

Did you have a look at the apps that were not currently compatible with Belle?  Theres's a list here http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/nokia-belle-update/nokia-belle-update-faq look under the Nokia Bell and applications tab then look under Overview of apps not yet compatible.

Thanks for the offer to help with the apps you listed.  All going well I should be right.

Dropped the N8 off at the Service Centre and she look at me and then at the phone and took a deep breath, like a plumber about to give you a quote on fixing a leaky shower, and wrote up the service docket. She didn't look confident that it would ever see life again.

So, $52 later and the N8 lives. I believe it has been upgraded to Belle. I thought I had a hardware fault, but apparently not (sorry Nokia hardware team for ever doubting you). This I find somewhat stressing as I had the firmware flashed by Nokia themselves a few weeks earlier.

This level of failure to me would be like PC software erasing the BIOS? Which one of them did it? Angry Birds, Panorama, ScreenSnap or Joiku Spot?

nikrolls: It has just been confirmed that the Symbian Belle update will be rolled out to NZ product codes, and should show up in due course (read: soon).

Did you mean "soon" Nik, or did you mean "soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon"? Smile

No real panic here as I am away travelling for another several weeks in a place with no hope of a WiFi or physical link to the internet to perform the update (another phone as a modem though, perhaps) but in the past we have been well served in NZ with prompt updates for the N8. In fact with Anna for 059C7R0 N8 the update was in the first bunch released internationally.

What seems to me to be a possible concern now is on the Nokia Belle Update Availability page NZ seems to be following the same track as Australia with an availability description that could mean anything  (and some Nokia comment on the User to User forum seems to bundle NZ & Australia together), even perhaps that no start has been made on the software for NZ & Australia with naval gazing still to result in a decision to start. Australia was very poorly supported with past updates due to the fault of some out of the carriers, Nokia Australia or of "Australiana".

By "Australiana" I mean their propensity to believe that solutions that the rest of the world find quite acceptable are somehow not applicable in Australia and their solution needs to be special and more complicated, or their propensity to naval gaze and analyse to death technology solutions. These comments based on my experience with them in several international technology areas (but not 'phones) and an international operations business.

So after all that -

Has "soon" now gone by the board?

Are we now bundled with Australia in as far as processing of updates is concerned and so we now have to suffer from the abysmal update support they suffer from (for whatever "Australiana" reason)?

I would not be in any hurry to get it. I got it when I didn't want it (see "fix" above) and I have found the low light camera performance has suffered. Low light photos look like I have fog in my lense.

Is that with flash or no flash?

If with flash I have found that I have to keep my all fingers behind the phone on the left hand flash end else enough of the bright xenon flash reflects back off them to give a fogged exposure. Others have told me that they have found the same.

In my case it was outdoors without flash. I took a comparative shot with a lesser phone camera (Xperia Ray) and it was a lot better, of course the N8 destroys all others at night with flash.

@BretR & @ NikRolls - Great to see so much effort being put in to pushing the Lumia collection out to market. As unprecedented a campaign as I've ever seen from Nokia since I've lived in NZ..... But for us N8 owners, are either of you able to shed some light on when we can expect the Belle update to be available? Cheers.

My N8 is parallel imported, 2 Degrees is my operator. Received Belle upgrade OTA well over a month ago, and it has given the phone a new lease of life. Only trouble I've had is with JoikuSpot.. they upgraded for me but having trouble getting any data throughput.. so I just cable connect if I need to.. easy. Nokia Suite upgrades have now made this a very handy platform as well.. syncing, charging, and I even use Music as my player on Laptop now. All in all very happy, I read this morning that Nokia working on a tablet.. will be very interested to see this.

Shouldn't matter if you use Nokia Suite.. unless your NZ operator/supplier has instigated some deep rooted trickery with Nokia.

Yeah using Nokia Suite, latest version, still can't update, on Vodafone. I've never tried to remove the operator details or whatever it is they install before we buy them. Flashing?

Hi All,

The way it works is that each operator that launches a handset has to test and approve the handset firmware before it is released to market, to ensure it's not going to affect the network in any unexpected way and that the phone and firmware work in the manner it should/

Each handset released with an operator has it's own unique product code, which each firmware build is loaded against. Before we can make a firmware version available for a product code we need to get this approved by the releasing operator.
We continue to work with VFNZ to ensure this latest version of Symbian does get released, but at present we don't have a date we can share.

Brent
