Well After buying a phone today I thought i'd load er up with content and see what she will and won't play.

I wrote this up while I was disseminating it, and hopefully this information is of use.
Software is down the bottom, I assume this is all freeware, Softwares marked ((trusted.....))) are personaly tested (used every day by myself and clean of any spyware.

Sony Ericsson v800 phone formats

Formats that play and ALL audio formats work as Ringtones! (unlimited length)

Audio
mp3 (you must know what these are!)
mp4 (Mpeg Layer 4, Wraps both music and video files and work perfectly)
3gp (universal low bitrate Video format for mobile phones. Common VideoPXT format and used for music video)
mid (Standard midi files usually used for polyphonic ringtones)
mmf (Yamaha Realmusic and Polyphony format, usually used in Sharps & Samsung)
amr (used in voice recording and "realtones" intead of Yamaha's mmf)
wav (windows WAVE files)
dcf (DRM protected files as downloaded from Vodafone LIVE! used for both Video and audio)
Images
swf (shockwave Flash used for vector animations, this came as a surprise)
gif (Compuserve "Graphics Interchage Format" animated supported)
png (portable network graphics)
jpg (Joint pictures experts group C'mon you know what these are!)
Other
mpn (Ericsson custom games format which is not Java)
thm (Ericsson Theme files to change the appearance of your menus)
jar (java applications, games)
jad (wrapper for the above files)

Formats that phone creates with various imputs.
3gp (recorded video's from camera)
mid (Ringtone composer)
amr (for voice and phonecall ;-) recordings)
dcf (created for some downloads)
gif (output from "image editing")
jpg (Camera Photo's)

Formats that DON"T work but the phone CAN move them around and send them!!!!!
aac (Advanced Audio Coding, early trial forerunner to mp4)
wma (windows media audio format)
mpg (old mpeg-1 video files)
mp1 (old Mpeg layer 1
mp2 (old mpeg layer 2)
ogg (vorbis music files)
3g2 (3gpp Video version 2)

All files (except for the DRM "dcf" files and some mmf files) can simply be loaded on or off the memory stick and used how you please.

Tools for making files!!!!!!

AMR (realtones, Voice recordings) ((((((((((((TRUSTED software)))))))))))) by Sony Ericsson
Go get the Commandline AMR-WAV/WAV-AMR converter from:

http://www.ericsson.com/mobilityworld/developerszonedown/downloads/tools/messaging/AMR_Converter_v_12.zip

3gp (movies/videos) ((((((((((((TRUSTED software))))))))))))
Xilisoft Video converter (shareware, limit 5 min files but well worth the purchase as it's multifunctional for converting cr*p files (wmv, asf) to good open formats like DIVx, not just mobile phone files)
This coverts most common formats (wmv asf asx, mpeg, mpg, mp4) to 3gp format for mobiles as well as coverting many many other video files! (Except Quicktime .MOV and .RV Realvideo)
To use, Open the video file(s) you want and click them. On the right hand select "video codec" and choose
Xvid for high quality, H263 for low quality.
Audio
AMR_NB for low quality, Mpeg4aac for high quality and select sampling rate below it for 22,000KHz or higher.
Find it at:

http://www.xilisoft.com/video-converter.html

Mp3 ((((((((((((TRUSTED software)))))))))))) FreeWare
You need MP3 cut. This allows you to snip parts out of songs for ringtones, maximum the gain to make it loud. (left click start of bit you want to copy out and right click end of bit you want. and click [file], "Save selection as" and save it for your ringtone! EASY!)
from:

http://www.mpesch3.de/

SMAF (You have mp3 and AMR but you can share these with your Sharp and Samsung friends) ((((((((((((TRUSTED software)))))))))))) by Yamaha
download some free tools from yamaha themselves!!!!

http://smaf-yamaha.com/

dcf files((((((((((TRUSTED Software))))))))))))) by Sony Ericsson.
If you really must use DRM (this might let some use mp3 ringtones) get the "wrapper" Software, this will allow you to write "protected" files in case some of you are restricted with mp3's.. from

Sorry bout long post but you guys can have some FUN without paying a packetload.!!!!!!

isnt that excellent news, custom tones etc is a biggie in my opinion.

I make my own mp3s but a winamp output plug-in that puts to a wave file (for cd writing) then use nero wave editor. Its a round about way but I find it perfectlly acceptable

Not saying your method is bad by any means,, Nero's wave editor is Excellent.

Mp3 directcut edit's the actual frames inside the mp3 file which allows for perfect chopping from mp3 source, there is no "transcoding" reducing the quality. It's the only one I know that can direcly edit.

Something which occurred to me today is when you buy DRM protected music, I wonder if you can "burn to CD" direct to a ISO file and just rip that? I know you can burn to a real CD but that seems just a waste!!!

(updated main post to relect usage with the 3gp converter)

alcohol 120% allows you to mount images and treat them as drives etc.. skips the step of burning them to removable media then running them

i'd rather burn given my limited hd space on my laptop
