Yep, no reason to be too afraid of buying second hand.

Got my Sig Pros yesterday, can't remember if I mentioned that already. Very nice sound, but I don't think they will supplant the T5p as my favoured portable cans (T5p just has a much better voicing for rock and metal). Shame, since the removable cable, nice portable case and articulating cans would make them better suited for portable listening if the sound fitted for me.

Thinking now I will probably get the Jaben removable-cable mod T5p, better suited to portable use and allows for balanced cables (since I now have a fully balanced portable amp in addition to having balanced outputs on the Xonar too).

Where do you think the diminishing rules start to apply when it comes to headphone AMP's. I am trying to get something really special for my HD650's but I don't want to spend the earth. The O2's rate really well and certainly won't break the bank, though you can spend almost anything. I wouldn't be prepared to spend $100 for 1% difference so if I could get my headphones to 95% for $x that would be a useful guide.

My $500 home made dac/amp sounded EXACTLY the same as the $2000 headroom amp to me. I think amps are bit snake oil ish, depends how much power your cans need, what your source is.

What source are you using? Where will you use them?

As Timmay says, it depends on lot on what you're trying to drive.

Since you also use an S3 (is that right? I think I recall that), I think it'd make sense to use something that you could pair with that too for portable/transportable use.

Bearing that in mind the Leckterton UHA-6S.MKII could be a good buy at $279US. Works with the S3/Note 2 and presumably the Note 10.1 too and future Samsung high-end Android phones, and in fact fairly ideal for use with them since you can turn off charging via USB completely and just power the Leckterton from it's own rechargeable internal battery. It has an +18 gain setting, which is quite a lot of grunt for virtually anything short of the HiFiMan HE-6. Furthermore it has changeable OPAMPS, which gives you some room to play around with its sound and invest in better OPAMPS/more synergistic OPAMPS with your headphones later as you see fit. Has an excellent reputation - check the review at Innerfidelity. The DAC section is the flagship Cirrus Logic one, may sound better than your ASUS STX, but also means future desktops and laptops can use the DAC from the Leckterton at a pinch which might be handy. Also has 24-bit/96kHz optical and coaxial S/PDIF digital audio (TOSLINK) inputs, which might make it useful for pairing with other devices.

I should have one next week, so you'd have the chance to try it out too :)

Initially I'll be pairing it with my PC which has an Asus STX Sound card which has a reasonable AMP/DAC built in. It's hard to get someone to put a stake in the ground and say the STX will push the 650's to say 70% of potential, and by upgrading to a $400 AMP/DAC Combo, you'll see another 20% and $600 would get you to 95%.  I'll also connect it to my Yahama Home Theatre amp if I am listening in the lounge but that would be rare. I don't intend to use the big cans with the Ipod, as I have a set of really good IEMS.

Thanks. When my cans arrive I'll arrange a meet up with you.

I had a read up on the NWAVGuy Blog. I found his posts very accessible.

I suggest you get the headphones and see how they sound, then borrow an amp or two to try out before you spend and money, especially since you have a few guys around who seem happy to help you out.

You really can't say if you'll see any improvement at all. Personally I probably wouldn't bother to amp a PC sound card, I'd want an external DAC and amp together.

Yup I'll definitely be trying some borrowed kit where possible. I really like Head-Fi, but it's hard to work out the hype and tripe from the reality.

Yep, we're very poorly served for this stuff in NZ. Other places you could just go to a store and audition everything... man, that would be nice.

Well I can understand it. I auditioned the HD650's at a retail store, the service was good, but the price was 30% more than buying online. I don't mind a small difference but 30% is a lot. It's a double edged sword as I am sure you are aware.

Pretty sure your amp is mostly a status symbol, they probably all sound virtually identical.

You might be right, though even with my HD555's I noticed a MASSIVE (Relatively) difference between listening to the 555's connected to the 6.25" Output of my sound card, vs the 3.5" on my Logitech 5.1 Speaker System (Top of the range), which was connected via Toslink, and the Yamaha Home Theatre (Also top of the range). The STX was just what I would consider .. significant.

It was enough my wife noticed, which is saying something (No disrespect to her intended but she has little interest)

My girlfriend didn't seem to care about the difference in sound quality between a pair of $30 headphones and the HD650s. I don't know if she couldn't hear a difference or just didn't care. Since she doesn't seem to have any hearing problems I suspect the latter.
