Does any one sell a lead that I can use network wiring to transmit sound from my PC to stereo?

Ive got a wired network, just want to output sound from PC to another room.
Ive got spare network jacks (might as well use them!)  and can patch it back to the stereo

eg cable with ends terminated as such:

3.5mm > RJ45


RJ45 > twin RCA

Does any one supply stock cable? / will it work? / do I make my own?

What you're doing will *kind of* work.  But not ideal, since RCA is unbalanced and twisted pair is balanced.



See how it goes.  Otherwise you might want to look at what's called a "balun".

Hmm... lots of expensive toys to spend money on :)
With the right search terms, plenty turns up on jaycar - I guess just not the cheap easy answer I was hoping for

I made up a set of Baluns for this exact purpose using CCTV baluns. There are many models such as http://www.trademe.co.nz/home-living/security-locks-alarms/security-cameras/cctv/auction-530900326.htm that send one analouge channel over a single UTP pair. You will need two (or one pair) at each end for stereo, and it uses 2 pairs (or 4 wires of the 8 in Cat5). As they have BNC plug on the end by standard, you will need to solder on the 3.5mm jack or RCA jacks as appropriate.

There is definitely a bit of attenuation, and the dynamic range doesnt seem quite as good, but they work pretty well
