Greetings, Now that I have installed HD Freeview, I now realise that my existing DVD recorder isn't capable of recording HDMI. So I am considering upgrading to an appropriate DVD recorder. What do readers recommend? I have been happy with my existing Panasonic recorder, apart from the quirky UI. I see there is a 650H model which seems to fit the bill, but LV Martin also had a Sony similar spec'd model (RDRHX950B). Since I have a Bravia TV, I wonder if there might be some advantage in a Sony DVD player. Any input much appreciated.

Even if you have a DVD recorder that has a HDMI input it will not deliver any benefits over your existing DVD recorder as DVD is only a SD format and won't allow recording of HD content. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Check my blog post

yes but most recorders have a hard drive that will hold HD content.. As for which player to get im not sure, i liked my samsung that claimed it could hold HD content but didnt have hdmi input so that wasnt much use!

Even if you have a DVD recorder that has a HDMI input it will not deliver any benefits over your existing DVD recorder as DVD is only a SD format and won't allow recording of HD content. Does that meanthat I could however record HDMI quality to the HDD of the DVD recorder but that I couldn't burn it to a actual DVD? My main concern is to be able to record from the Freeview channel that will carry the Olympics. Looks like I may need to review my TV-STB-DVD setup....

It's unlikely that you will find any HDD units that can natively record HD content in NZ to the HDD. The only way to record HD content at present is to use a PVR with appropiate software or purchase a BluRay recorder and use the HDMI input. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? I wonder if this would work Happauge HD PVR Says it has PAL and NTSC support. Doesn't record from HDMI but from component which I see the Zinwell has. Freeview approved PVR would do the job...but unfortunately they may not be available until early next year. PC based PVR like this may only be the solution to your "HD Recording" problem.

Even our solution myPVR doesn't currently support recording freeview\|HD, but it is in development. Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat New Zealand as a Solution Architect for all things Linux, Virtual and of course Cloud. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.
