Given there is no ongoing subscription for Aussie Tivo, at first blush it seems that a Tasman-hopping Kiwi could get some use out of one.

What tuner(s) does it have?
What channels could it pick up here?
The service needs to be "activated" after 7 days. Would it be completely unusable after that?

As ever, I have but one pair of the many waggling ears that are waiting for rumours and leaks about a NZ Tivo service. I understand Seven network have the rights, but since they don't broadcast in NZ I wonder if there will be any urgency to launch here?

The tivo service has been a long time coming for OZ.. Was also supposed to be launched in NZ but haven't heard any more about that.  It would be a subscription service no doubt, much like in the USA.  I think there would be plenty of issues if it was launched here.  Sky would likely not want to be on board since they have their own PVR and Freeview would likely do the same.

You can of course get hold of a series 1 tivo and get it working in NZ.  Many people have done this (including myself).

There has been an underground, or "hobbyist" TIVO service in Oz and NZ for years. I have had one running for the last 3 years, as have a number of colleagues.

Works well with a standard SKY decoder, and should do with the Freeview system as well, and simultaneously. Works with all NZ-generated EPG ( Electronic Program Guides)

It aint hi-def though - S-video quality is about the best quality achievable. S-video in, S-video out ...

It's sorta like MySkyHD, but without HD, and without the exhorbitant charges.

Can also yank the files off the Tivo for later viewing, or storing/sharing

It's a modified Series 1 TIVO (easily done via disk image)  and there are a few up for sale in Oz, on the account that TIVO HD has landed there. Around the $150 mark should see you with a network ready, 80-160 gig HDD Series 1.

Series 2 and Series 3 cant be modified.

Now that I have used it, and kids use it - soo easy, and it would really hate to loose it's fucntionailty. 

Check out nztivo.net (basic, and mostly just a starting point)   or oztivo.net, which conatins the most info for both sides of the ditch.
