Quick q to all who have pioneer av receivers.
When the receiver is receiving an HD audio source, what does it display?
the reason I ask is mine has only ever displayed "DTS" or "DD Digital" even if I am playing a Bluray and have set it to output DTS HD or True HD.

Is this normal, or is my so called "high speed" hdmi cable not up to the task and only allowing standard DTS/DD thru?

I have a vsx 920 although only had it for a few weeks I'm yet to see dts-hd I have only had dts or dd digital

How do you get the sub to work when only getting stereo input eg mp3 or channel 2?
It seems to only play 2 channel and nothing else?

Thanks for the reply. It may be normal to just show DTS or DD even if it's an HD version, but it just seems weird.

As for your other q, my source is all via my HTPC, which outputs almost everything to 5.1 over HDMI. However, my receiver is THX certified, so for the occasional 2 channel input (ipod thru usb at the front occasionally) i just hit the THX Music options which sends it to all speakers. Oh, and all my speakers are full range, so I am only assuming the sub is going (hard to tell with just music sometimes)

There is an option on my remote for "Source Direct", which will only play the channels that are input, but then there are several "surround" options which invoke the centre and rears (and I assume sub), on my 1019 at least.

What does the manual say?
Is there an picture/image on the screen listed for this, ie is it even able to display anything relating to HD audio?

Re music through sub etc, yeah you have to select an option that creates sound for other channels, or one that is stereo that includes the sub as well. Try some of the sound options, one will definitely do what you are after Zalman.

There is nothing mentioned about display for the HD audio, altho it does say it is capable of decoding True HD/ DTS HD signals.
The display shows what the audio input is usually (PCM/Stereo/DD/DTS etc) but no mention of any HD formats on screen.
Seems odd they would go to the effort of displaying what they do, then screenprinting the HD logos all over it, the boxing and manuals, but not update the display.

What is your HD audio source, and how is it connected to the receiver?
eg is it a stand alone bluray player, a htpc or a PS3 etc, via hdmi or optical/dig coax, multichannel analogue etc?

Are you sure you are receiving/decoding HD audio?

I have a PS3, Xbox 360, MYski connected through HDMI and a PC connected with HDMI and optical cable to the receiver, then one HDMI cable to The samsung tv

I only seem to be able to get the pc to output 5.1 if the file im playing is DTS or DD 5.1
If I try and play music from PC to receiver it just plays standard 2 channel stereo and the sub isnt doing a thing.
When I try and stream video files or music from xbox or PS3 they both only sending stereo 2 channel aswell

I have tried all the surround settings on the receiver, if I use prologic the centre will kick in but that is all

It is unclear what you are playing your BRs on.
An optical cable is only able to do up to DD and DTS (AFAIK). If you are playing BluRays from your HTPC and using optical you won't get DD-THD or DTS-MA bitstreams.
If you are using the PS3 to play BluRay you probably should look at the settings on it. AFAIK the PS3 has the ability to decode the HD audio formats and pass them as PCM. Not sure about it bitstreaming and I'm not home to have a look at the moment.

My BR's are all played in the HTPC, and audio/video all passed via the ATi GPU to the receiver over HDMI.
I use Cyberlink PowerDVD 10 Mk II for playback, with audio set to pass through undecoded. ATi Drivers 10.9 which support HD audio pass through.
Any way I can tell what audio is getting passed out from the PC?

Cool that's the info I was after.
I've heard it can be done like that, Nety knows a bit more about this from memory.
However, my first instinct is to suggest that you're not actually getting HD audio that way. If no one else has this model receiver etc, it might be worth asking the question over in the HTPC forum as well, ie can this hardware/software combo actually do this?...

Dingbatt, the first gen PS3's can't pass over the raw data (bit stream), they have to decode the audio themselves. This means the receiver will never show the HD audio logos as they will only ever be receiving LPCM multichannel data that's already been decoded. The new slim PS3's can pass on the info without decoding it.

It is possible, it is how it is recommended by Cyberlink. ATi Drivers before 10.5 don't support lossless audio, but after that they do. Cyberlink also had to update their software (hence the Mk II) to cope with this.
I'm thinking I may not be getting HD audio too, but I have no way to verify. I might go back to ATi and Cyberlink for some help.
Cheers

Do you know anyone with a bluray player, or PS3, preferably PS3 slim?
Sorry I can't help on the PC side, though what you are saying says you are up with the play on this.
Perhaps ask in the HTPC area though, someone may be able to confirm or deny...
Good luck!

No, all my mates come to my place to watch movies as I'm the only one with BR. And we all have 360s.

"Darling, I have to go buy a PS3 and GT5 to test my receiver....."
"Yeah, right!"

I have only every had Denon receivers which do display DTS HD Master Audio and Dolby True HD when I am playing a blu ray.  I did do a lot of research when I upgraded my receiver a few years ago and from what I recall all receivers should show DTS HD Master Audio or Dolby True HD when a blu ray with an HD soundtrack is being played.

If your receiver is only showing DTS or DD then it is highly unlikely that you are getting HD audio out of your blu ray player.  Could be a settings issue on the receiver or a problem with the blu ray player or HDMI cable. Please note though that not all blu ray discs come with an HD audio track. Some still come with a standard DD or DTS soundtrack. Warner are the main culprits in this area.

Hopefully you can  get to the bottom of the problem. An HD audio track is generally way better than a standard DD or DTS soundtrack.

Much as I hate to suggest installing additional software on your media centre. It might be worth downloading and trying TotalMedia Theatre. I know from the forums that it works well with HD audio. Unfortunately I do not have a HD receiver so cannot say myself.

http://www.arcsoft.com/en-us/software_title.asp?ProductCode=TMT3P#

I seem to recall the trial does not support Dolby HD in the trial (due to licensing restrictions) however I think DTS HD should work fine.

It is also on special currently (30% off) if you do find it works.

EDIT just noticed that I think the discount ends today by the look of it.
