Hi Geeks,

I know nothing about car stereo systems. I recently installed a head unit and rear speaker into a friend's car. The front speakers are also worn and so I would like to replace them with something that balances out the rest of the kit.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions on a quality brand and appropriate type. Looking to spend sub-$90 on the pair.

Installed thus far:

Sony CDX-GT260 (head unit -- 50W)

Sony XS-F693G (rear 6x9 speakers -- 50W)

Thanks,

spagbowl

50w 6x9's? Is that max or nominal, because you would really want 200+ max watts on 6x9's.

If you want to spend sub $90 on front speakers, then pretty much just get any good brand name speakers in there, possibly better value by going to a car stereo specialist and seeing if they have decent ones that you wouldnt find at Repco et al.

With no seperate amp etc and a low budget, you arent really going to find a hugely spectactular difference in $90 speakers.

I have found in the past that the Japanese speakers sometimes sound tinny. But on the other hand i also stick with a brand so if you have sony at the moment i would stick with sony. You should be able to get some good 6" speakers for well under $90.

Such as: http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=838059

i would go for http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=503800

Thanks very much for the replies. Much appreciated.

The Sony kit I installed was received as part of a Mitre 10 giveaway. I am not looking for anything fancy, just a solid replacement for the old busted front speakers.

50W RMS methinks. My thoughts were to find any "well known" brand speakers that are also 50W rated. The prices I have seen so far have been all over the place. Anywhere from $40 to $200 for similar rated speakers manufactured by the usual suspects, i.e. JVC, Alpine, Sony, etc.

Does anyone know of a particular special that they are able to point me towards..?

I had a look through PriceSpy and Parallel Imported comes up as the cheapest supplier.

The options seems to be 25W-40W RMS. The head unit has written on its face "4x50W" -- I take this to mean it will happily drive any front speakers rated under 50W..?

Ive had good experiences with the cheap sony speakers. But would avoid the panasonic ones personally, they tend to be the cheapest but tend to distort

+1. Used several sets of the $50ish Sony 6" speakers recently, and they've been good. They don't sound as good as a $300 set, but very happy for the price.

Thanks. I'll purchase some matching-ish Sony front speakers.

Cheers to all for responding to this query placed in the 'Home Theatre' forum!

The 4x50w on the headunit will be max rating. Most headunits are around 8w rms.

This thread reminds me I need to install my amp and crossovers in my new car. I hate running door wires

A little above your budget but you could do worse for the money, JVC CS-FS60

I'm not a big Sony fan when it comes to speakers. Car audio wise Infinity speakers are always fairly good but wont fit your budget.. ..Spend some more ;)

If they are just going in the holes in the door then IME high end ones just don't work well. that's only with 2 pairs however so there might be some that are made to work well in an open backed baffle type situation.
