Just took delviery of a new ONKYO network reciever from an online retailer.

I orderd a NR-509 (5.1) they billed my for a SR-309 so I waited to see what they sent .

Score! Yesterday I recieved a TX-N609 (7.2)

Nice unit with everything I need and some things I don't.  I'll run it in 5.1 to start with but nice to know I have options.

My only dissapointment so far is the remote control won't work on my Samsung HD-DVD player and only does channel, power and volume on my Bravia TV.

The Onkyo system enables me to enter a remote code for the TV, but no remote code exisits for the HD-DVD.

The reciever has CEC so I had hoped interdevice control could be achived via HDMI.

Worst case scenario I have a Logitech Harmony remote somewhere ...

I'd be interested to hear how hot the receiver gets, and also if it does network stuff how well that works. I like my 508 (I think that's the model) but i'd love network play of internet radio stations, and movies from my PC. That's almost all my PS3 does.

Gonna try network function tonight, so will report back how I go

One thing it does do well so far is play from the iPod.  I can switch the reciever to USB, plug my iPod into the USB socket on the front and access music and playlists via the remote.  Just trying to figure out how to get onscreen display working in USB mode.

Just set up DLNA between the reciever and my PC (Windows XP).  Very easy -
  1. Connected recevier to homenetwork via ethernet cable
  2. Went into Windows Media Player 11
  3. Activated media sharing
  4. Selected reciever
  5. On receiver selected Net mode
  6. Selected DLNA
  7. Selected DLNA again
  8. Folder menu came up
  9. Selected and played music
Sound quality was good, there is search function etc.

Video and picture folders come up but with red crosses next to them and not selectable.

Music has to be in the WMP library to be played.  Only problem is of cpurse it can't play MP4 so no video podcasts.

I also have iTunes on this computer.  Not sure If I can stream from iTunes, apple being apple prob not but might try later.

PS3 Media Server's a good DLNA server. It works with my Samsung TV too, without the PS3 turned on.

Is there any accompanying documentation to show that the company was aware that they were supplying a 609 for the price of a 309?
If not, what you have there is not a "score", but unsolicited goods - something that you did not order, and have not paid for.
You are legally obliged to inform the vendor and keep the goods safe. After, I think it is 3 months, if they have not been collected, you may keep them.

Turns out there are two spearate transactions on my credit card and although the shipping docket states 309 as the model, I have paid in total the 509 price.

The 509 is no longer available on their website.  I assume they had insufficient stock and couldn't send me a cheaper model so sent me the 609, which is the only other similar model they stock.

I won't be losing any sleep over it or wasting my time ringing them up.

You obviously then don't subscribe to the idea of treat others how you'd like to be treated. I am sure in the reverse you would like someone to take the 2 minute to make a call to let you know.

Got my new TX NR579 the other day and loving it as well, especially  DLNA.

ONe thing I haven't been able to get working however  is to "push" the files to the Receiver from a Network Share or from my Windows 7 "Mediaserver".  Can "pull" the files all OK from the Receiver.

All the music is on a RAID drive on the MediaServer machine, and have also added that folder into the Windows Media Library.  Have added the same on my Windows 7 Laptop.

On my Laptop, I can push a song to the receiver if the file is physically on my Hard Drive and in my Music Library, but the same song from the network share (but in my Library) doesn't work

I haven't tried push, but I am using xp and wmp11 on an older pc. Will have a crack and let you know.

I tried the Internet radio with various free services. All have poor sound with a tinny metallic almost synthesised quality to it. But I'm not sure this is the receivers fault, broadband speed at our place is variable at best and this may be the issue.
