Topic # 93348 18-Nov-2011 17:09 Send private message

I've got a new TV that has four HDMI inputs, one component input and one composite input.

I want to connect my Wii and and my DVD player to my TV.

The Wii can output in composite or component, and the DVD player in  composite, component or s-video (but I don't have s-video on my TV).

At the moment I'm using component for my Wii and composite for my DVD player, but I would rather use the component output on my DVD player to get better quality.

Is there any way I can use component on both the Wii and DVD player?

I've tried looking for a switch box that accepts two component inputs and has one component output but I couldn't find anything like this at Dick Smith or Jaycar.  I don't mind manually switching between the two.

Or maybe there's a component to HDMI cable or converter, which would let me use one of the spare HDMI inputs on my TV.

Suggestions?

Jaycar do a Component to HDMI convertor (Part No AC1605) which you could use to connect your DVD to HDMI input on the TV. BUT its $135.00 and you still have to buy an HDMI cable.
JB HiFi have a Panasonic DVD for $84 which upscales to 1080p and HDMI out. They have a Sony BluRay player for $168. Most likely both have cables included.
Why bother with adaptors?

Sorry guys, I forgot to mention that the DVD player is part of a home theatre system, with five speakers plugged into the back of it. So it's not so easy to swap it out for another player, unless there's a Blueray or DVD player that has spring clips on the back to accept the speaker wires.

Does it have any inputs for external units e.g. optical digital?
If it does you could get another DVD or Blu Ray player and take the Video to the TV and the sound to the Home Theatre DVD unit.

Maybe one of these.
It seems to be a 2-in, 1-out component video switcher (or I misread the ad).

A cheap option would be a component video switch.

Jaycar do a two-input one-output version (CAT. NO. AC1647) for only $24-90. If you want more, Monoprice (who I have found excellent) do a four-port version with a remote control for $US 19.87 + shipping.

Does your TV have a VGA aka "PC" input? The Wii does 480p60 over VGA, with the right cable and menu settings.

Indeed my TV does have a VGA input.  I'll look into hunting down a suitable cable as it would mean I could do without having to buy the switch box and two new sets of component cables.

Thanks!
