I know this thread is a few weeks old now but what was wrong with the hex crimps that I've used in the past? Looking at some of the links posted here the choice of compression tools seems quite varied. Do some have special advantages over others? Do they 'all' suit 'all' the different brands of compression fittings and does it matter which fitting you choose? Thanks Robin

I think this has been adequately covered: cyril7: the linear crimps we are discussing are the best there is and have superiour water resistance, cable clamping and most importantly return loss compared to the radial ones Jaxson: Because of all the reasons Cyril mentioned above, namely reliability, ability to withstand water ingress, to correctly maintain the signal shielding, achieve minimum insertion loss and for physical strength etc

Seems like consensus is to use PPC connectors (like these http://www.freeviewshop.co.nz/type-connector-cmp6ors-linear-comp-crimp-type-p-380.html), do you pro's out there use them for everything in a house? Obviously you would want a waterproof connection on your dish or antenna, but is it worth using them when connecting to the back of a wall outlet? Or is it simply simpler to use one connector for everything?

Hey I'm with you here, I get that compression fittings are the latest and greatest and I may well move to them myself on my next project but you obviously haven't used them up till now so have you had issues with signal loss, the fittings falling off, rusting? The Hex crimp style fittings I used, had silicone gel as did the cable itself to seal out weather. The crimp was NOT coming off without destroying the cable, didn't rust and had no problem passing the signal, so suddenly they're no good because of.....? I've had no problems when I've used them and wondered if you had?

NZRobin The Hex crimp style fittings I used, had silicone gel as did the cable itself to seal out weather. The crimp was NOT coming off without destroying the cable, didn't rust and had no problem passing the signal, so suddenly they're no good because of.....? I'm not saying they are no good, simply technology has rolled along now and linear compression is better, for one because it continuously clamps right around the cable. I did have some connections that would slide off fairly easily, despite being clamped correctly and selected for the right cable size etc. If you were/are getting good results from a hex crimp then that's fine, no ones coming to arrest you for still using it I used the gel filled units too but took rather extreme measures to ensure they were water proof as well. I guess the deal is simply that for the same amount of effort you are producing a system whereby the components performance is maximised over the hex crimp approach. Hex crimping will work, just as screw on attachments will work too, but SKY for instance no longer supports this approach, it's not the industry best practise any more. Sales blurb wise, compression connectors offer greater Shield Connection integrity, Bandwidth, Interference Rejection and Impedance matching when compared to their Hex Crimp counterparts.
