I am looking for a cheapish second blu-ray player for the spare room, and note that the Warehouse has this on sale for $124), which isn't too bad for a 3D Blu-Ray.

I am interested in this model because:

1.  It audio out, and I have an old pensioned-off set of "home theatre in a box" speakers that I could hook it up to.

2.  The other Veon blu-ray player (model VN2916BR-DVD) was multi-region for blu-rays as well as DVDs. The instructions were (using the remote) - press SETUP, then 8520. Select 0 for DVD and then 1,2 or 4 for Blu-Ray region (1=A, 2=B, 4=C). Details are here:

http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=190652

As I am interested in ordering disks off Amazon, I am particularly interested in making sure that I have a way of playing Region A disks. The 3D is irrelevant, as my TVs won't support it, but would be nice to have as an option if I upgrade in future).

Does anyone have this model or have access to this model and, if so, can they kindly verify whether the region-free instructions above also work on it?

Just make sure that Veon constantly provide firmware updates - otherwise copy protection changes from movie houses may mean your player won't be able to play the latest and greatest BluRay's.

Is that actually a problem? I have a cheap-as-chips Memorex player here which has a region selection menu. I've never updated the firmware and haven't run into any Blu-rays that won't play.

Anecdotal evidence from my local DVD shop says it happens. I think it was Avatar triggered a lot of problems.

Interesting. Avatar works for me (and was released after I got the player).

If you're spending $80 on a BluRay player, then buying a new one 2 years later if it won't play the latest discs shouldn't be a hassle. However, if it's a $400 player, it's probably a different story?

Sorry, might have been unclear in my earlier post. I don't have the cheaper player (the one proven to work with the region change codes, which is 2.0), I have just read reviews about the region change code. The 5.1 player is more attractive because it's on sale, it does 3D in case I ever need it, and it has 5.1 analog out for audio which will work with a spare cheapo speaker set I have in the garage.

I am looking for anyone who can confirm whether the region code works on this model, if so I will buy it, otherwise I will buy the lesser specced one that is known to work.

Hi, yes I've got one of these - the Veon VN2916BR-DVD. I got it at a half price online sale on the NZ Warehouse website. The region adjustment you asked about works for me. I haven't tried any overseas Blu-ray discs yet.

I'm pleased with it as a DVD player that seems to cruise over scratches that my other players stick on, and the ability to play movies/music/photos straight off a USB thumb drive is really handy.

I'm looking for a manual on how to operate it, in case you come across one. The included one is very basic.

Regards.

I got one of this for our bedroom as we don't need full surround sounds etc, mainly for bedroom movie before sleep usage.

The only gripe is, it has a very slow start up but for that price for a BD player, it's cheap enough that it plays well and don't mind the slow start up.

The other thing to look or be aware of is, it doesn't automatically switch to 1080p mode despite having set that in Setup. So you must always use the "HDMI" button on the remote.

The player indeed can play multi-region DVDs, and also enable you to switch BD region although the effect is not permanent - had to do this after each power-up.

I have not tried connecting to internet but has found playing video files off the USB Flash drive just fine - the format was MKV.

It is essentially the same as Veon. http://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php?s=7c65c6828eb4926cc5d370db6c8b19ca&p=5634600&postcount=7
