Hi guys,

I've had a Samsung PS51D550 51" plasma for about 6 months without any issues. Turned it on today and after 5 minutes it clicks and image disappears. It then went through a series of clicks before stopping and now the standby light blinks twice for 5 times, pauses then starts the blinking sequence again.

Tried unplugging from mains for 10 mins turned it on again and same thing. The initial click is the same one when you normally turn it on, the starter I assume, but 2 seconds later there is a quieter click which sounds like the one when you turn it off. It does this 4 or so times before resorting to the blinking business again. I tried a different wall socket as well but no difference.

Did a bit of googling and I'm certainly not the only one with this issues and it seems likely its the power supply or the capacitors on the main board from what I can tell but I aint no tv tech!

Since it's obviously still under warranty should I just ring Dick Smith and ask them to get a tech out a.s.a.p? What's the best way to go about this? If it does turn out to be busted, I'd like to upgrade somewhat if possible. I notice they don't sell this model any more, just a cheaper similar plasma and some more expensive LEDs so would they likely offer a newer tv? I still have the box and receipt.

Anyone got experience or tips with either this issue or dealing with DSE to get is resolved?

Cheers!

It does sound like a power supply problem to me. If it was out of warranty i'd be cracking that sucker open to have a look at it myself, but as it's still covered i'd:

Ring DSE, say you have a broken product and ask for their normal return/replacement procedure and follow it.

They might replace it straight away and just get you to bring it back to the store, or they might get someone to collect it and get it sent away for testing before issuing a replacement. I don't know, but a quick call or trip into the store will sort it out.

Odds on - it's going to be a repair.
Ring the store you purchased it from, get them to look up your sale - and they'll coordinate a service agent.
Don't let them fob you off to Samsung, it's DSE who have sold you the product, so it's Dick Smith who will honour the warranty. And no, it probably won't be a replacement, just a repair - not an upgrade.

Ok thanks. I bought it from the online store not a physical one so who should i ring? When I rang them asking about the ETA of the tvs delivery I spoke to some woman in Australia who couldn't tell me anything...

Don't suppose the warranty starts again from the time of the repair?

Ring the number on the website, do not let them fob you off.

The warranty will not start again, but you are still covered by the CGA.

You will be without your TV for a bit while they repair it, but let them know what you think is reasonable (IMO, 2 weeks would be my limit)

They'll swap the power board and junk the old one. It's quick job, unless it turns out to be something else. Most repair techs won't do component level repairs on TVs anymore.

See if you can keep the old power board if they send someone around to do it. The replacement's capacitors will start failing in time so the old one may be more use for a capacitor swap repair as it has had little wear.

Capacitors must be strengthened against heat to survive inside a plasma hothouse but capacitors with higher heat and voltage tolerances are more expensive.

Geez haven't Samsung fixed this bug yet ?

Duff power supplies have been endemic across their LCD and plasmas for years now.

Good luck on getting it repaired.

I had a Samsung LCD with dodgy power supply, it took the official repairer two tries to get it right.

First attempt made the problem worse !

Second try all went sweetly.

That was a year ago, TV has been good since the second repair.

This most likely doesn't apply to NZ - while the Samsung product's in the US lawsuit might or have been sold in NZ...the lawsuit settlement doesn't.

It is interesting to know what has happened in the US, Feb 2012. Although I don't see the OP's model listed, so it couldn't possibly be Capacitor Plague issue (I am sure Samsung would own up to it, if it was), Samsung to Pay Millions to Settle Lawsuits Over Mass LCD TV Failures
