Hi Guys,

I'm seeking advice on a $200 sound system as an X-Mas present for my brother, he plays a bit of games, watch movies and plays music

Preferably a set with a bit of Bass... I had a look at Logitech Z623 which is $198 at Dick Smith ($179 at Playtech and Computer Lounge)

Do you guys think this one is a good buy?

thanks

They review great here

Apparently cheapo 2.1s tend to have bloaty bass and not sound good for music but these look a good bet, not heard them myself

I had a pair of Z623's. The bass is very good and punchy, kinda muddy compared to higher end speakers as you'd expect considering the price point. I found the Z623's amazing for rather loud gaming/movies.

I've still got my old Z-2300 going strong; I've actually got them hooked up to TV\HTPC while looking at AV receievers\etc and they sound great.

Bang for buck, I can't recommend the Z623's enough. Great sounding system for a home theatre.

I can agree with the Logitechs. I have got the Z5500 (the 5.1 version of the Z2300 which is the older model of the Z623). They last a long time with a lot of loud sounds coming from them. However, if your brother would prefer loud sounds, booming base, the Logitechs are the way to go.

For an Audiophile, I wouldnt really recommend Logitech speakers. Mostly because in terms of clarity of the sound, mostly for music (such as classical - not hip hop or something), the logitechs come off as too bassy and not enough highs.

But I am assuming that you prefer a set of one to rule them all speakers. Logitechs are good.

Gooseybhai, is this a good set? I can't seem to find any spec details on the product

I have listened to a Logitech Z2300 which a friend currently uses and it sounds really good, loud, and a good bass (boom boom)... which is what i think my brother would love

Bose have a policy of not publishing specs. Something to do with their philosophy.. But the Companion 2 (I have heard them a few times) are good speakers if you want to sit back and just listen to music and movies. I think for gaming, the Logitechs are better esp for explosions and stuff.

I personally think Bose is awesome, but it has its purpose - I think its more for music listening than anything else.

I was in the market for 2.0 speakers a few months back - I was looking at getting M-Audio AV40. But these are about $250+. Reviews said those things were awesome!! but they are quite big. I ended up moving my Logitechs (5.1) in my room..

I have some Edifier 5.1 speakers that cost me $550, new price $750, I'd probably let them go for $250 or so. Perfect condition, sounds great, I just don't have space for the sub in my new office. PM me if interested.

I have some AudioEngine A2's, which are pretty good for the price and size, though they're not near as good as the Edifier.

wow that is a very good set, unfortunately my budget is fixed :( thanks for the offer though, you could probably get a lot more than $250 if you put it up on trademe or someone here might be keen on nabbing them

I've put them on trademe twice, no takers, though will try again tonight. They're really quite heavy, so they're expensive to send around the country - the better part of $100.

I bought a pair of Audioengine A2's a couple of months ago. Now that they are 'run-in' I absolutely love them and will never go back but - they are only 2 channel so great for music, not as great (but still really good) for gaming, movies etc. See this: http://blog.stereotype.co.nz/category/buying-guides.
