My 2.5 year old dell xps 1645 has been overheating for about a year and half when maxing out ie reencoding iphone videos ...

Now it actually BSODed at 108 degrees ...

Time for thermal paste replacement as i want to wait for intel halswell and skip ivy bridge ... Good move?

So is there a difference between all the pricespy products or is one superior or one to avoid?

How many grams do i need?

Thanks

Any will do, don't need to go for the most expensive one.

And use Geekzone Price instead of PriceSpy ;)

Is that the CPU temp or something else going critical?

When operating the machine normally is the temperature within the normal range?

It could be a dust problem, it does not take much in a tight enclosure to disrupt airflow.

Even after paste reapplication, if it was overheating that long ago you probably need to invest in a cooling stand to use while encoding.

I have dismantled the entire thing not a drop of dust left

Gosh that is really bad. Still have the receipts? Consider getting it done under CGA. I'd courier to Dell's New Zealand office with a letter to that effect. Maybe you have investigated this side of things already.

1.5g is fine. Clean everything, including vents, etc. Might as well get a can of compressed air to force clear everything.

Send me your address on a PM and I will send you one 10g of those DSE ones - I bought for my HTPC a couple of months ago and have a spare here.
