Hi

I have a Compaq Presario f500 laptop which came with vista installed.  I wiped that and have been running Linux on it.  I now want to put Win 7 on it I have a new camera and Lightroom and Photoshop.  I see the specs say 2 Gb memory is needed for Win 7.  According to the laptop specs it can take 2 Gb memory DDR2.  Is this the correct memory, and how easy is it to install in a laptop?  I have done it in my desktop.

Thank you.

My Compaq v3000 takes the same, and my specs also said it would only take 2Gb.
Noel Leeming at the Base hamilton had sticks for $10 last weekend so added a stick with a 1Gb and it runs with 3Gb no worries. Would have added 4Gb but as it is only 32bit it will only recognise 3Gb max anyway.

Okay - thanks for that.  My pc is 64 bit so perhaps I'll take it in and see if they'll do it for me.  I suppose it can't be too difficult.  I have never looked into the innards of a laptop!

Two phillips screws on the underside and remove the cover, two little clips either side of ram and it flicks out. Just line up the cut out slot when re installing.

Thanks - the laptop is a few years old and I can't see it on the list unfortunately.

Direct link to the PDF manual for memory repalcement.

Failing that where abouts in NZ are you, I'm sure one of us could either do it for you or recommend a reputable store in the area.

Thank you.

I did find that link in the end so I could change it.

I now can't find where I got that information about the type of memory, as whenever I enter the product number I get Compaq Presario f500CTO, and CTO products don't have info listed on the web.

I'm assuming, possibly wrongly, that the type of memory is correct.

I'm also assuming that if my Linux install says I've got two caches, one with 64kB and the other with 1024kB that I can put 1024 in the 64 slot?  Or maybe it would be best to put the same brand into each slot?

Many thanks.

Oh I'm in Hastings BTW.

Again thanks for the input.

I checked on an American technical support forum and they've given me the correct memory details (I hope).  Any information I've had from there in the past has been correct.  Lucky I checked, as it's different from what I thought.

Do I need two sticks of the same brand of memory or can I put different brands in?  Can I out a 2Gb in one slot instead of two 1Gb?

Thanks
