My friend has a toshiba satellite pro L500. Recently the screen started to play up. When the lid is opened to a normal viewing angle (say 100 deg angle on the screen), the screen often turns off. If you then close the lid to say a 60% deg angle it works fine.

I don't know if its a faulty sensor or something? Any idea how to fix it?

Thanks
Blair

I'm going to show my ignorance - is that the part that connects the motherboard to the screen in a laptop..?

Assuming it is that, is it a generic cable or specific to toshiba, and is it something that is user replaceable or something you should send away to have fixed? I've no idea how to go about repairing laptops (over 3 years old so non warranty fix)

Yes, specific to Toshiba and if the machine was purchased in NZ it is likely in stock locally.

Thanks. Is it user replaceable to someone that has experience with PC's but not laptops?

(I assume the first step would be to crack it open and see if it was a lose connection, is this something I should attempt? If not, any recommendations on where to fix it for repairs. I'm in Whakatane so no options here..)

Depends on your dexterity and experience I guess. There is a service manual available for download here. Looks easy enough.

If you search for toshiba l500 lvds cable on ebay you get prices between usd$6 and usd$15.

If you get it locally maybe you can return it unopened if you don't need it. Waste of time if you have the machine in bits then need a cable to finish it.
