Hi all

Are there any legal eBookstores that sell their books without DRM so that I can read my purchase however I choose?

I have an iPad and would like to buy a particular book. I can buy it from either the Whitcoulls Kobo store, the Kindle Store or the Apple iBookstore (UK), but as far as I understand it this then locks the book into only being readable in the respective app it was bought under. I want to buy my book - legally - and then import it into the Whitcoulls app, the Kindle app OR the iBooks app or any other reader I might purchase in the future. Is there a solution?

Thanks

Steve

Nope. (Although I _think_ the kobo store does epubs? But they may/may not be DRMed)

calibre for all your ebook needs, the current version has links to ebook sites that provide access to both drm books and non drm books

sites I like that provide no DRM (their is more, but I use these 2 the most)

- O'Reilly Books - for those tech books we all love so darely
- Baen Books - for the sci-fi / fantasy fix one needs - Baen have both a nice subscription format and free library for your book needs

and if you use Calibre for your ebook management (which is a must) then you can get an addon pack for it that can assit with DRM management of ebooks you purchase.

There are in fact lots of publishers who don't use DRM and sites where you can download books without DRM. You can even find DRM-free books at Amazon, although they are usually self-published by authors who (wisely) don't want DRM. DRM is a terrible idea, actually, from everyone's point of view and I expect it to die out in due course.
