We are increasing testing three-fold and need more Telecom customer volunteers.  Help us to improve New Zealand broadband performance by volunteering to host one of our probes.

The probe is a bridged router with an 802.11n wifi on board that we encourage you to enable through our website.

Volunteers are needed in Hamilton and Dunedin as well as many smaller centres, I'll update here when that changes.

I would be interested but it sounds like i'd have to Double NAT through your router, and theres no way i'd be doing that. Can the device be connected to the network without being in the middle?

It is a bridged router, so I don't think that would be an issue

Got one here, it's not double NAT it basically acts as a transparent bridge.

Reason to have it in the middle is so it knows when tests are being affected by traffic from the client devices on your network.

My probe arrived today. Just looking on the website at the moment to turn on the wifi.... Where is it?!

Edit:
And just thinking.... if I put this between my modem and router I won't get an address given out from the router as the modem is providing a WAN address to the router. It should be sweet putting the probe between my router and switch won't it? The only thing you want is for all traffic to pass through the probe right?

YES!  we have reached capacity for Telecom volunteers, we even have a waiting list in Auckland and Wellington, but our spread over the rest of the country is great - apart from Rotorua/Taupo area, one or two from there would be good
