A year ago I rang Telecom and signed up for the Galaxy GT-I5503T on the $40 Smartphone plan and a 24 month contract.

2 months later I rang them again and changed to the $60 Smartphone plan.

I rang them today to ask about changing to the $60 Mobile Broadband plan and they want a $400 early termination fee.

So to go from one $60 plan to another $60 plan it's gonna cost $400 - man! what a rip!

Don't sign a contract and expect it to be easy. Pay monthly ftw!

Sorry, just trying to understand what you want to do? Go from a Smartphone $60 plan to a 2GB Mobile Broadband Plan with no included SMS or minutes?

Yep that's exactly what I wanted to do.

I only use a few minutes/texts from my quota each month and always use my 1GB of data.

I would prefer the 2GB data included in the $60 Mobile Broadband plan and if I needed to call or text, then just pay the 20¢ per TXT and 69¢ per minute.

When I used the cents symbol on the above post, it looks fine on the GZ mobile site but a weird "A" shows up on the full GZ site.

I wonder if it has something to do with the Gingerbread keyboard I'm using on my Android?

Double-check the "Schedule of Disconnection Fees" because I'm on Smartphone $40 and according to the schedule I received, the fee drops to $200 after three months, then to $130 nine months later (i.e. a year in total).

Yeah you're right - Telecom quoted me the $60 Smartphone plan early termination fee (Tier 6) instead of the $40 Smartphone plan early termination fee (Tier 4)

It might be better if I call into a Telecom branch with my paperwork to prove that my 24 month contract was originally a $40 Smartphone plan.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter, you're bound to the ETFs of the higher tier plan. Although I'd certainly have a go at that one because unless you get the up-front benefits of the higher tier plan that's extraordinarily unfair.

You're able to change back down to the $40 plan without penalty (I moved to $60 and back to $40) so this is possibly a case of the systems simply not handling the fees correctly. If you go back to the $40 plan then you'll probably get the correct fee.

Those are the new tiers, you should be on the older tier's as per your Contract. Sorry I can't remember what tier the 2GB plan is/was but if it's the same tier then you should be able to move to it, or up and down the tiers as per your contract (but have a read of it 1st).

If the store can't help, flick me a PM and I'll look into it for you.

Might also want to check the rates, I think it's $0.91/minute.

ot sure if this is off topic a bit if so I apologise in advance. I'm not what you would call wealthy by any stretch of the imagination and liked the idea of a phone for $--- dollars per month, sounded cheap way of getting current phone but the downside was technology changing and for 2 years you are stick with it.

I bit the bullet and bought a SGS2 and went on a monthly scheme no contract which I find great and gives me flexibility to change as required.

Given the availability of credit these days I would recommend buying outright if you can.

Thanks everyone for the advice/comments, I'll call into a branch next week with my paperwork and speak to someone face to face.

Okay all sorted.

What a difference 24 hours makes. I thought I'd give it one more crack with the Telecom call centre and this time I was able to change plans no problem.

So when I originally signed up to the $40 Smartphone plan, that is a Tier 1 plan. I then upgraded to the $60 Smartphone plan, that is a Tier 2 plan.

Because the 2GB Mobile Broadband plan is also a Tier 2 plan, I was able to change plans after all, clear as mud aye? The call rate is $0.59/min so it's all good.

Also if I was that way inclined, the early termination fee for the last year of a 24 month $40 Smartphone plan is only $130, phew! much more palatable.

What's still puzzling tho is where on earth the call centre was getting their info from when I rang on Friday.

And finally my last post on the subject.

When I rang yesterday and sorted everything out they quoted me $0.59/min for calls but according to my "My Telecom" Plans & Activities tab, I'm on the Casual Voice plan which is $0.35/min Calls to Telecom mobiles and $0.70/min All other voice calls.

I'm not fussed about the discrepancy but I just thought I'd mention it so that if any other folk in the GZ family are considering going down this route, the info's out there.
