I signed up to a total home broadband package - think it was he 120Gb total home, about 4 months ago. I saw an advert on TV tonight saying that their new plans now have free weekend calling, which I don't think my old plan had. I have gone onto their website and can see the new plans. But I am not sure if we are automatically upgraded to this new plan. It appears the new version of the plan I am on and paying,now comes with 150GB of data per month. Does anyone know if this is correct. I can't see any mention of the old plans, so I can only assume that all their existing customers are automatically shifted onto these new plans. Just a pity they haven't communicated this upgrade to their current customers.

Greetings,

You won't be shifted to the new plans automatically. Unlike the last time where Telecom just up'ed the data caps for all plans, the new plans are just that, new. So you will have to choose a plan to move to.

In regards to mobile calling, this is the first time that they have offered unlimited calling to any Telecom mobile (on weekends) as part of the package as opposed to the $6 my favourite options.

On their website there is an option to custom build the plan with or without the mobile calling. Also, 0.5TB looks very interesting.

I have been with Telecom for over 12 months and it is that time of year where I will review whether I stay with Telecom or go with another provider. Any thoughts on who are the best?

you won't be automatically switched because the plans are not better in every way. National calling is more expensive for example.
But you are totally free to switch to whatever plan you like.

Thanks. The problem is though that telecom no longer display the old plans (not that I can see anyway). So I can see the plan I am currently on and it's features, so I can't actually compare what I am currently getting vs the new plan. Although looking at my bill the new plans are $8 more than I am currently paying, and the cost difference probably isn't worth it as I don't need the extra 30GB of data, and I don't call that much from the phone line. But unlimited mobile calls during the weekend is an interesting and competitive addon. As I am on a 12 month contract they may not let me change until that is up anyway.

You can still change plan of you are contract. Best thing to do would be to phone them up and get them to explain the new plans and how it differed from your current one.

A key difference is that the old plans had fixed options. Total Home Lite at 30Gb also included free calling to a landline or Telecom mobile. Total Home had free national calling. There were options that allow you to add calling options also. The new plans are simpler, in that there are just four data options, 5GB, 50GB, 150GB, 500GB. Plus, you can mix and match the new calling options, and there are more. Mobile, landline, weekend, fulltime.

If you are on Total Home Broadband 120GB, that includes the landline and 120GB. There are no free calling options included.

There have been bill slips going out and advertising to try and make existing customers aware but as has been said you aren't changed automatically mostly because of the changes to call plan options.

If you were on the 120 GB Total Home Broadband plan and want to change to the 150 GB Home Package the only change you will experience is a change in toll calling rates,
Landlines will go from $0.18 p/min with a $2.50 cap for 2 hours to $0.24 p/min with a $3.00 cap for 2 hours.
Mobiles will drop from $0.39 for telecom mobiles and $0.48 for other network mobiles to a flat $0.39 p/min and now also have a $3.00 cap per 2 hours

Cost per month will go from $105 to $99 for Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch or $115 to $109 in the rest of NZ 

Lastly be aware if you swap there is no going back =]

Only thing I just wanted to point out here is just that weekend national and mobile calling for $14 per month is any network, not just Telecom. Favourites however remain Telecom only.

Quick Edit: As has been said you are able to change plan up to once per month within a contract. Contracts apply to having the broadband not the plan it is on

Thanks for explaining the cost differences. That is a lot more helpful than the telecom website, regarding the call cost differences.

You can get a sim for $5... That's like less than a coffee in Auckland :)

Plus you can get a free sim if you sign onto a Smart OneBill against your account.
