Backup Internet is always handy. Hence why I don't have 3G with the same DSL provider.

My backup 3G connection is with telecom, and the problem didn't affect that.Just didn't want to use it too much due to data costs. But I guess it is ok for just email. But don't think I can tether my desktop to my S3 phones 3g connection, as the desktop isn't wifi, at least I haven't tried to do it. Possibly it can be done via the USB cable.

well back in 2010 that give us a huge shocked on the nation wide outage on their XT Network though. Not that i implicating they are getting worst, but i would expect that Telecom services should be as reliable as our nation power grid. Telecom service is consider a life support utility now aren't they?

Why? On what basis? Chorus is responsible for the "national grid", not Telecom. Telecom is not even the largest mobile operator, so why shouldn't the other, largest, operator be the "life support utility"?

There are always people out there who will bag Telecom regardless of what they do. A 5 minute outage seems to make the 6.00PM news these days but other ISPs or carriers seem to get threated with kid gloves when they have problems. . It seems to be a national past time these days..

Probably stems from the Gattung era, takes awhile to shake of that stigma of being an anti competitive monopoly

I would argue that both the Chorus infrastructure and Telecom networks as a whole (this includes the NEAX's and core network) are vastly more reliable than our national power grid which has numerous single points of failure.

You can't have a protocol like MPLS or BGP in the electricity world..

i see, so new zealand power company delivery network is not design in a "grid" layout, and it is all point to point delivery network?

Anyway back to the fact that telecom services delivery network can't be designed to a fail proof layout, so what are we having this thread in the first place? *wondering what's the point of us discussing over broadband down?

as long as we expect it to be on a routine occasionally 'nation wide' down time, life would be happier lot aren't we?

"Telecom will offer free nationwide landline calls on Christmas Day to make up for widespread broadband outages that affected up to two thirds of its customers last week."

I'm on free nationwide calling, so , no compensation for me!

Because telecom are not taking a financial hit for such outages they may take less care than otherwise in future.

What? The free calling?

No, it's not a joke. That's their offer.

I think you would be very ill-advised to think that Telecom don't take this outage very seriously.

If you have a specific concern I recommend you ring the Broadband helpdesk on 0800 225598 about your specific issue.

I can assure you that this the issue is known to the highest levels of management and is being taken very seriously.  I'm personally working on a solution to ensure it never occurs again.

I work for Spark, but as always my views are my own.

Not taking a financial hit?

I appreciate that you won’t be gaining anything (which is why the offer is just silly),  but most people wouldn’t be on the unlimited calling packages and so would normally be making quite a bit of calling on xmas day to family around NZ, which will now generate no revenue for Telecom.  So they are definitely taking a financial hit.  Whether the financial hit is for the appropriate people is another matter (yes in some cases, no in others)

If telecom took it seriously they'd have refunded customers 2/30 of the monthly broadband amount.

'Show me the money'

The compensation offer is woefully inadequate and compensates those who don't have broadband more than me.

I think it is a good offer. They probably didn't have to offer anything, so it is more a goodwill gesture. Other ISPs I have been with never offered anything like this, potentiallyu people could save a lot of money calling friends and family around NZ. But I can see peoples points if they already have free calling, and many people go out on xmas day so don't do a lot of phoning. Perhaps a 1 or 2 day credit on that actual BB would have been more relevant, as that was the service that was affected.
