In case anyone else is in the same boat as me:

My ISP is TelstraClear, I have an Xtra email address, and I use the beta of Windows Live Mail in Windows Vista to access my Xtra email via Xtra's 'Remote Mail' service which allows you to download your Xtra email through another ISP. This requires different server settings in your email program than if Xtra is your ISP.

Since my email stopped working on Saturday and I wasn't able to send/receive emails anymore I have been trying in vain to get it working again trying various settings, the settings that Xtra said it should be, and suggestions from other web sites but nothing worked until now. If you use Xtra's Remote Mail service and you can't access your email then try these settings, which now work for me:

pop3.xtra.co.nz and send.xtra.co.nz
'username'@xtra.co.nz under the 'Incoming Mail Server'
Tick the box for 'My server requires authentication'
SMTP port 25 (SSL not selected)
POP3 port 110 (SSL not selected)

As far as I'm aware these settings haven't been posted anywhere else and I got them just from playing around with them. Why they even work I don't know, especially as they aren't even the settings that Xtra say they should be. I can only assume they will work in Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail as well.

So if this only helps one person then I'll be happy as I've been VERY frustrated the last few days trying to get my email working again!

(Similar situation, ie xtra Secure Remote E-mail service)

Are you able to send messages to other than xtra customers, or maybe to some Telecom hosted domains?

I have tried those settings (including using port 587 instead of 25) as user XXX@xtra.co.nz, but messages to non-xtra get bounced:

It seems to me that all Xtra email access via POP3/SMTP is now "secure" and Telecom have now finally posted settings here:

http://xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4150-4453061,00.html

In summary:
Incoming: pop3.xtra.co.nz, 995, SSL on
Outgoing: send.xtra.co.nz, 465, SSL on

I don't know why they didn't warn people of this.

Their claim on 3% of users affected is simply not believable.  Anyone using a mail client would have been affected by these changes!

I think it's an attempt to push people towards using webmail so they get good “uptake” of Yahoo and can drive advertising revenue!

Yep no problems sending mail to anyone now, regardless of what domain it is.

Well just to add to the confusion (I use Xtra as my ISP on Telecom ADSL), I have continued to use my original settings without any issues - i.e.

Incoming: pop3.xtra.co.nz, 110, no SSL
Outgoing: smtp.xtra.co.nz, 25, no SSL

Both versions of these settings work for me, but send.xtra.co.nz will not. as stated in this thread; http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=15215&page_no=7

FFS Telecom/Xtra/Yahoo/Bubble How hard is it to publish your email server settings, and have them work.

For days I have seen everyone trying to guess the settings, because the Xtra help pages still list the old settings pre-migration.

I had migrated the last of our clients off Xtra a month or two ago, because of the last three major outtages, so was blissfully unaware of all this.

When I did go looking for the settings for a mate which could do e-mail, they had nothing.

Even worse, a client got a mailout saying they had to change all their settings to officemail.co.nz and they did, and it stopped working.

A message this evening from xtra:

"...We have noticed that you have unsuccessfully attempted to send email via Xtra over the last couple of days. [well 4 actually]...The correct settings can be found at
http://xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-7780597,0.html...”

These settings were the same as mentioned above by rsngt and elsewhere, and which I had tried on several occasions previously (including w. authentication & SSL rec/snd)

Tried again (again) - e-mail now gets to non-xtra addresses (as well as xtra addresses).
My suspicion is that something was going wrong w. the authentication process between the TNZ & Yahoo platforms in respect of our particular xtra usercodes (not registered for "Bubble"), perhaps because they were originally setup for “Secure Remote E-mail”, and that xtra/yahoo have finally fixed this particular issue.

Several of our clients had been having these issues too. I went out today to fix it, but they still wouldn't work until we forwarded port 465 for outgoing mail in their routers. It was only dlinks that had this problem.

Xtra email settings in the Xtra Help pages.

And this is the Yahoo!Xtra Bubble e-mail FAQ:

Q. Has my Xtra email address changed with the upgrade?
A. No, your @xtra.co.nz email address has not changed.

Q. Do I need to do anything to access my email if I use an email program like Outlook or Outlook Express?

A. No, if you use Outlook or Outlook Express to access your email then you shouldn't need to do anything or change any settings.

If you use a private domain name to with your email you would have received several communications from Xtra advising you to change your email settings. To continue to receive email simply change your settings, for a full set of instructions visit www.xtra.co.nz/officemail.

Q. Will my Xtra Email Aliases continue to work?
A. Yes, email sent to your Xtra email aliases will continue to be delivered to your primary mailbox.

Q. What are the new Yahoo!Xtra Pro Mail (Yahoo!Xtra Bubble) email settings?
A. For the new settings click here.

I have a POP3 connector on my Exchange Server and three Xtra e-mail accounts being downloaded to the server. I've changed them all on Saturday and had no problems accesing the server.

I have to say I have received a few e-mails from people angry at Xtra though, who could not access their e-mails. They all came to me with requests such as "fix my e-mail" or similar.

I am used to these e-mails - I get a couple of those a day, with requests to change mobile accounts, landline addresses, etc. People obviously use Google to find "Telecom" or "Vodafone", and click on a link to Geekzone. They find the "Contact" page and send it off. They don't care if the domain is "geekzone.co.nz" instead of "vodafone.co.nz" for example. They are not stopped by the fact that there's no Telecom, Vodafone, Xtra logos in our pages at all.

I get all kind of personal information - account number, credit card numbers, addresses. People can part very easily with this. This also shows how easy is for phishing scams to go around...

Obviously Xtra did not take in consideration that a part of their 600,000 users would need help with things as simple as this.

I believe in the registration process for Bubble, underneath Make Yahoo!Xtra my home page there is an option to automatically configure your email client. Has anyone tried this?

I haven't tried. I don't use Xtra e-mail addresses. I have three accounts that are downloaded to my Exchange Server, for my family-in-law use.

It is obvious other people haven't noticed the option or didn't use it. Not surprising, seeing how people can be so... simple.
