Hi all,

I was wondering whether Telecom will be offering packages to customers that only includes broadband and not the home phone line?  This would effectively be naked DSL ... but with Telecom.

Any whispers about such a package?  I'm not even sure it's technically possible (but I'm sure the boffins here will set me straight!)

Matt

Telecom don't currently have a VoIP product on offer so I would say it's unlikely until they can offer a bundled package to customers.

Yeah, I want to know as well...

Currently I'm on Xtra for Broadband, Telecom landline rental and Basic Sky - want to get rid of the landline desperately (will use cellphone in the meantime), maybe switch to cable-broadband with Telstra but what happens to TV? I think the telstra packages won't allow you to have a Lightspeed connection + TV with no Phone Connection...

Can anyone shed any light on this??? Do both TV sources (Sky or Telstra TV) need you to have a landline setup?

APOLOGIES Jesterz if I've hijacked your thread.

You don't need a phone line to work with Sky TV, they blather on about it, because thats how pay per view works, but if you don't use that then you are sweet.

We didn't have a phone line plugged into the sky digital box for the two years we had it.

Yes, but you get a discount on the basic sky package when billed with your Telecom homeline.

heh! ..touché nzbnw, probably not a biggie but a bit of a PITA when I'll have to end all phone, data and TV services with Telecom and Sky then start afresh with Telstra or Xnet and maybe throw in a TV connection on top...

<sigh> why aren't things ever easy!

A very general response from Telecom when I enquired today:

"Telecom Retail has not yet made a decision if, how, or when it will offer naked DSL based broadband products to our customers, we are certainly looking at it."

So I guess wait and see and don't get your hopes up!

If they are priced like the current xtra plans, then anyone tech savvy enough to want it would be getting there naked goodness from greener pastures.

Mind you, I cant fathom why anyone has an xtra connection other then the only 1 bill to pay aspect so perhaps pricing has nothing to do with it. You dont need a voip service to sell naked dsl, lots of people have no use for a phone at home of any type.

everyone mentions price.  Have you not stopped to think that Telecom cannot lower prices to less than its competitors as it would be seen as "anti-competetive?  Once the unbundling is more widespread, all ISP's will be charged the same, including Telecom (as it will just be another ISP), then prices can be set accordingly.  I guess if your anti-Telecom, cant help that.
