Topic # 78160 28-Feb-2011 19:05 Send private message

Bought the phone on Friday and it was running 1.6, been looking how to upgrade to 2.1 myself over the weekend and today the official update was made available. Thanks TNZ.

Downloading now and look forward to the extended battery life. Currently lasting about 6 hours! But mostly because it my first Android device and I am still learning, corporate email was the first to be tuned.

Will post a further update if it was successful or if I bricked it! :)

Now all you need to do is wait 12 months for an update to 2.2..

Or wait forever, since they're not updating the X10 to 2.2. (Or buy a new phone!)

Ouch, it got stuck in a boot loop after upgrade completed ok!

Google and androidforums.com came to the rescue, read the thread linked below and managed to do a repair and update again.
http://androidforums.com/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-mini/213225-phone-looping-after-update.html

Now it is finally upgraded, its upgraded as much as it will get I guess...

I read unofficial 2.2 and 2.3 are very buggy (i.e. camera or 3G doesn?t work) and SE wont be giving it much focus with Xperia Play, Arc and few others coming out soon.

Using the Sony Ericsson PC Companion 2.0 software.

I plugged my phone in to the PC via USB and it automatically detected a new version of Android was available, the rest is all step by step instructions with the upgrade wizard.

[thanks to Jason at Telecom for this, I have 8 X10s to be upgraded here]

There is a known issue with upgrading the xperia x10 from 1.6 to 2.1.

The PC companion software advises there is an upgrade and steps you through the process, but apparently there is a form of compatibility issue in that it doesn’t seem to work. Sony Ericcson advised to upgrade using the Update service. Both I and others have used this method successfully.

Although please note, those who I know who have tried this method have had to do the clean install option, as the upgrade didn’t work. It is advised to back up your settings and contacts (there is an app pre installed for that) before attempting.

The update service link can be found below:

Subject: Sony Ericsson Customer Care : NZP111- Update Service

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you contacting Sony Ericsson.

Based on the information provided in this circumstance I would suggest using the Sony Ericsson Update service software as this may fix the issue you are currently experiencing  please follow the directions below to achieve this task.

Download and install Update Service on your PC. When an improved software version for your product is available, you can download it whenever you wish, and always keep your phone software up to date. You will be guided smoothly through the update process. For some phones a backup is needed, or data will be lost.

Requirements:
*        A PC connected to the Internet (preferably broadband)
*        USB phone-to-PC connection. Please see the accessories compatibility list for your phone.

Note! Sony Ericsson doesn''t charge anything for the service, but like when you download music or games you may have to pay for the data transmission, and there may be a charge from your Internet Service Provider.

How to use update service on the web:

1. Before you start you have to download the Update Service software from http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/softwaredownloads/detailed/updateservice?cc=au&lc=en

and install it on your PC.

2. Once installed on your PC, double-click the Update Service icon on your desktop to start the update.

Note! For some models you will be prompted to do a backup prior to the update and then restore.

3. Follow the instructions in the program. It is important that you follow the instructions exactly. When asked, connect the phone to the computer using the USB cable.

4. When the phone has been identified and the needed software is chosen, click CONTINUE to start the Update Process.

5.When the update is done a message is displayed.

Please note that you will need to back up all data before using the Update Service, save your music/photos/videos to a memory stick or your PC, all phone contacts (phone numbers) should be saved to your SIM card  or Memory Stick.

- When using the Update Service, make sure you have a stable Internet connection
and any Security Software ( as it might block the connection ) is disabled temporarily while using it.

If you require any additional support please feel free to contact us on 1300 650 050 Mon - Fri 9.00am - 6.00pm.

Kind Regards
Sony Ericsson Customer Care

Good to know SE have listened to their customers, not looking too good for XT sourced handsets if I read the comments right:
"We will focus on delivering trade versions of the software. Regarding possible customized operators kit we will have to get back with more information on this at a later stage."

Though I think the xt handset is just the same China sourced x10a that Japan uses, so should be able to upgrade it through pc companion when its available to the Japanese handsets?
