lol Jama, touche my friend...

geekiegeek, pretty much any employment contract will have a non disclosure clause, and they are generally pretty tight. I am referring to specific incidents that come pretty close to being over the line, an would liketo discuss them with Jaffa for his own sake.

BTW there is nothing in NZ law to garentee freedom of speech (unless that has changed over the last couple of years)... that's one of the best things about the internet IMHO. however people need to be very careful about what they say, it's really only common sence, and I would hope if I had posted something that may jepordise my lively hood, someone here would give me a heads up...

Honestly... surely there's room for discussion, spirited even, on Geekzone without getting heavy about it? The thought of employers asking for employees being banned is crazy stuff, ditto managers warning staff in the forums for that matter.

If big corporations like Microsoft can allow its employees to express opinions freely on blogs and forums, then Telecom and Vodafone et al should be able to do the same.

Agree with you all... let me be very clear here. I am talking about very specific information that comes too close to revealing commercially sensitive information, not an expression of an opinion. I express opinions both for against my employer, and would hate to be prevented from doing so.

It's not a "I don't like the colours used by some company on their latest logo", it it was I would simply provide my opinion on said logo,

juha, MS recently fired and had an employee charged for leaking source code... Telecom and Voda would do the same if they had an employee do that... once again, I am talking about specific, commercially sensitive informtion.

mike: I think it's about time for full disclosure on Geekzone. If you work for a company in an industry you're commenting on you should be required to state so in your signature or not comment.

I agree. And if anyone says anything like "oh god..." they should also be required to disclose their religion and if they make a sexual reference, they must also disclose their sexuality. Alcoholics must also make full disclosure before being a bit slap happy with the "cheers" smiley too, ()

I will get the site admin onto this immediately.

Sure - that's pretty cut and dry. Did Jaffa do anything similar though?

tonyhughes: If an employee of a given company (e.g. EcoNet) makes the same remarks in a bar as in a forum, should the bar owner be required to take a register of Telcos his patrons work for?

Now thats just ridiculous... but its the same concept.

People are accountable for their OWN actions. GZ cant PREVENT sesnsitive information being posted, but GZ can discourage the practice, and remove access to infringing material at its discretion (which may include a request from the owner of that information). That doesnt mean their is an onus on GZ to keep track of who works for who (unless we all provide Mauricio with references, and he checks them regularly, in case we switch jobs and dont disclose this to him).

Be mindful of your obligations set out in your contract, use commonsense, dont post stuff if you think your company would say "no" if you asked their permission first.

Hrm, interesting reading.

Pretty much all of it's common sense and has been covered a few times before (for those that have been around a while). May be new to some of the more recent participants on the forum.

Of course, it's not exactly hard for people to work out who I work for and where in the industry I am, but I can also understand people wanting to make relatively generic information available to the public (and in this case other parts of the industry) who may benefit from knowing what's happening.

ie: I've never heard of it before, but apparently the Sanyo SCP-3100 might make an appearance in NZ. The reason I know? The Telepermits site - www.telepermit.co.nz     of course, just because it's been Telepermitted, doesn't necessarily mean they'll actually release it in NZ (as was the case with a number of Kyoceras in years gone by).  Likewise, the site is usually only updated every few months, so up-to-date information isn't necessarily available apart from semi/public forums where it may be posted.

Think I'll stick to common sense. If it's something I think my boss might have an issue with, chances are he would. If I don't think he'll have a problem I'll use best judgement.

Well. That ends a Monday. Now to brave that Hutt traffic. :(

Jp.

well my work has moved away from telcos so I wont be risking my job on here. I imagine that this conversation is related to the Samsung Blade thread or I havent seen the topic that sparked this discussion. It is clear you have to be sensible around confidential information but at times I fail to see the commercial sensitivity. However it is best to err on the side of caution. I do enjoy geekzone for the early word.

Whilst a few Geekzoners who've met me in person probably know who my employer is, I never reveal this information on the forums in order to avoid any perceptions that I may be representing my employer when I post here. It's good to take the opportunity to help people out in my area of speciality whenever possible, but I would never post any information that is not publically available.

As Jared says, this is all common sense and I'm surprised that this discussion is so long!
