Ooops.. my phone just crashed, doing nothing. All ok after restart. Will be monitoring to see if it happens again.

I made sure I used the original cable that came with the phone, then opened Kies and made sure I had the latest version. Plug cable into phone, plug other end into USB and it detected the phone (takes a while sometimes) and advised automatically there was an update and just followed the instructions. Make sure on USB settings on phone it is set to Kies. Sometimes if it wont connect I reboot phone and PC before starting and/or try a different USB port as it seems to be touchy. Downloads files and installs and all sweet. nb I reset my phone back to original settings using the reset under Privacy in the settings, just to make sure it was nice and fresh.

Is your phone on stock Telecom ROM? yes Kies is connecting but I'm only kind of a stock Telecom rom, have flashed it to the unofficial Telecom 2.2 release. Anyone know where i can get the files to flash the 2.1 release if that's what i need to goto 2.3? or even better the files for 2.3 so i can just flash it straight to that using odin. What I would like to know is how to root this update. The method I have used in the past (SuperOneClick) won't work with 2.3.3.

Search the Geekzone Android forum, it has been covered somewhere there. It may not be able to upgrade from "unofficial" ROM.

Kies is terrible. "MTP USB Device"wouldn't install. After much trial and error and several computers later i finally got it working, no clue how because the guides online for this problem didn't work. Hate to think what this must be like for a user who doesn't even know what a driver is. I am very glad this phone isn't mine and I have a HTC phone instead of a samsung one, and thats pretty much confirmed I won't be buying one in the future.

its easy just simply use Odin and flash voodoo kernel. then download SGS kernel Flasher on the market to flash a different kernel once you have flashed voodoo kernel. don't rely on superoneclick it doesn't always work. i just rooted a friends phone who has the telecom rom 2.3.3.. hes running Darkcore2.9 kernel now with lagfix enabled (ext4) ... ;] I've searched for Odin, the voodoo kernel and other bits and pieces and there are so many links to different versions of this and other versions of that, that I have no idea which ones to use. Would it be possible for someone to provide links to the correct versions here? Thanks
