Topic # 107403 10-Aug-2012 18:33

Hello,

My Orcon Genius supports a 3G USB stick as a backup and i'm unsure of what settings to use.

The following are on the setup page:

Service Number: i've tried *99#
Network APN. Internet.telecom.co.nz
3G Username: I've left Blank
3G Password: I've left Blank
Pin Code: I didn't put a pin on the SIM card but have tried 1234 and 0000

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm aware that Orcon does not provide any support for this as per their terms and condition.

Does it support the make and model USB stick you are plugging into it?

Unfortunately, there is absolutely no documentation on which sticks are supported and which are not.

I understand the Orcon version is similar to the iinet BOB2 as used in Australia, and there is no information on that either.

For everyones information, it's a MF190 T-Stick.

I doubt it's a settings issue as they look correct

You shouldn't need a PIN, only if you have enabled SIM security on a handset before.

It's more likely the harware does not support the USB modem you have.

It does not require a PIN when I use it in a phone.  New SIM and stick - Have not put any SIM security on it.

If you do have the time, try inserting a vodafone sim card or a 2degrees sim card into the MF190 since it is unlocked. Might give you an idea of whats happening.

Here's where it gets a bit interesting.

The Pin Code field is compulsory and requires entry. I did some reading on the bob2 used with iinet and the iinet representative said it was a known bug.

Refer: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1756791

After re-reading that thread (after actually having the device), I may give setting a pin of 0000 a go.

Didn't have a Vodafone SIM to try, but did try the Telecom SIM in a Vodafone K3565-Z and it did the same thing.

Thats weird, My friend is running a NETGEAR DGN2200M which has a usb port for 3g connectivity.
He has a Telecom MF190 plugged in at the back, works fine. It also fetched the apn automatically , so im guessing this is just a small issue with the router.

It's not technically "supported" even though the feature exists in the firmware/hardware. I'll ask around on Monday see if anyone has managed to make it work, I could give it a shot with my Nokia modem stick and see what happens too... Good luck, and if you make it work, please share!

If its a SIM pin issue and the BOB2 expects it (requires it), then can you put the SIM in a handset and set a PIN on it?

Random thought - Ive never done this before...
