Hi Guys,

I see on apple's site:

  • GSM model A1428*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE** (Bands 4 and 17)
  • CDMA model A1429*: CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (800, 1900, 2100 MHz); UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE** (Bands 1, 3, 5, 13, 25)
  • GSM model A1429*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE** (Bands 1, 3, 5)

[from http://www.apple.com/nz/iphone/specs.html]

Can anybody tell me which of these model should work on telecom's upcoming LTE?

Cheers!

I'm 95% confident that A1429 will be sold in NZ and from what I've heard, Telecom's trial LTE will be on band 3.

Your best chance is with the CDMA model providing you can get one unlocked. It has the most LTE bands available out of the three and has the necessary NZ 3G bands for all 3 carriers here.

I'd heard (admittedly a while ago) that the trials are supposed to be up and running by the end of the year. Have you heard something newer?

If I was a betting man I would say that the trials will start with the launch of the iPhone5..

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I'm still a bit confused about the specs.

CDMA model A1429*: CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (800, 1900, 2100 MHz); UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE** (Bands 1, 3, 5, 13, 25)

GSM model A1429*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE** (Bands 1, 3, 5)

So does the CDMA model do CDMA, plus all the GSM frequencies of the A1429 GSM model, as well as some extra LTE bands? Sounds like a no-brainer if so!

The CDMA model is locked to either Verizon, Sprint or KDDI. An unlock may be possible but don't go rushing off to buy one until this is confirmed.

Why are you all interested in the Telecom LTE launch? Vodafone will have a live network well before Telecom.

Was about to reply that prepay plans are the reason i'm asking for Telecom, but just took a look this morning and noticed that vodafone now has similar plans.

I'm likely in the minority here, but I don't actually use much cellular data or minutes. I'm usually on wifi, so in the long run, unlocked phones with prepay makes a lot more sense for me. In other words, it's not who has the best LTE network that matters to me, but which is the cheapest pre-pay per month and still LTE capable.

So cheers for that Vodafone suggestion - an option i should at least re-evaluate.  Especially since I'll need to buy a new sim card anyhow.

ps: when are they going to be LTE live in Piha and Raglan ? ;-)

why bother with LTE if you are mainly using wifi? it sucks your battery hard

I'd take a completely wild stab and say it's somewhere you might see LTE coverage from one or more networks within the next 3 or years.

Vodafones $19 prepay plan has been bumped temporarily to stop people from flocking to telecom. It goes down at the end of october, which is when you can no longer sign up for Telecoms plan.

Difference is, telecom let you keep it if you keep paying for it. Vodafone drops your allowance as of the 1st of november.

eXDee - thanks for the info! I was wondering about that. (since I remember Telecom saying that you could keep the plan) Very helpful.
