It'd be really handy to have peoples city available on the main conversation pages when you're replying to questions, as people often want advice that requires a local solution.

It should be optional, as not everyone will want to share that information.

I agree with you 100%. I often have to ask people where they are from in NZ.

Most people don't enter anything. And yes people who ask for help but don't provide a minimum of information is annoying too.

If it was visible on the forum threads maybe more people would enter it? The regulars probably would anyway.

I've asked about this before also. Personally find it useful on other forums, especially for buy sell type things or group meet ups, gives you a gauge of how many are in the area.

Wellington... it's in my profile but it's not public.

I requested to re-open this as I think this would be a really great addition to Geekzone

It's a feature that's very common on dozens of forums and I miss being able to see where people are located, afaik you can't even see it when viewing a person's profile details.

What is the general opinion on this?

I think it's a good idea. I'm from Upper Hutt and do not feel this should be secret information. If members want to hide the city they are in is it because they are embarrassed by some of their posts? I have had second thoughts about some of mine. If you say you are from Auckland for example you aren't exactly publishing your credit card number on the internet. If you are from a small town then perhaps put the region e.g. Taranaki is better than nothing. However if the information was required and people entered a wrong city than that would be worse than none at all.

Perhaps user names could have a rating value shown next to them which is based on the amount of information they provide about themselves.
