Stumbled upon this recently and just wondering if anyone else has had much experience with BOINC etc.  Team Geekzone anyone?  Wiki and main site.

Are they using BOINC? When I used to run SETI@Home it was nice and sweet. A couple of months ago I decided to run it again - now with a couple of dual core machines here...

The thing simply eats the processor, going to 100% and making other apps unresponsive. I removed it after a few days. I was going through a few SETI@Home units a day though, lots of power when compared with my first SETI@Home work units back on the days of my Pentium MMX 166 MHz...

Awww I still get green up-eyed face from you.  

They are using BOINC as I mentioned, and you can choose the amount of resource you're willing to use for it including CPU, memory and disk space usage (so it doesn't max out your resources).  I've only started a few days ago, so pretty new to it.  Have set it to only run when there's been no activity on the computer for 5 minutes e.g. when I'm taking a rare break from the computer (food, toilet, non-electronic relationships, exercise, work, sleep ... did I miss anything?).

Yes I tried that... It would mean no run for at least a full work day - and leaving the laptop on during the night just to run this is not quite "idle time" really... Although the home server is running here 24/7.

I used to run the FAH (Folding @ Home) client a year or two ago.

That one analyses protein samples or something as part of cancer research, and I used to run in 24/7 in the winter - overclocked Pentium 4 = Fan Heater for my room. :D

Freitism, I think there is a screensaver you can get for Mac that does the SETI folding. I've never used it, but I'm pretty sure I've heard others talking about it.

Try manually lower the priority of the process via taskmanager to the lowest possable?

The processing time of older seti@home units does not compare to the new ones, they have been adding much more analysis to the units as computational power has increased so the search is more comprehensive. Thats why the numbe rof units process has not scaled compared to your 166mmx as well as might be expected ;)
