Topic # 111084 23-Oct-2012 20:10 Send private message

I have just introduced a new feature to the forums: Set Answers.

Basically the OP, Trusted users, users with more than 200 posts and Moderators can set (or reset) a reply as the answer for a topic.

Once an answer is set a new option will show up that allows users to filter the topic and show only the answer:

This can probably help other users a lot, in special on those long discussions that go off topic...

We are giving Trusted users a bit more of control of the forum by allowing them to set a reply as the answer - use it wisely folks, let's make the forums even better for everyone!

Cool! Just tried 'view answer' on this topic. (b.Safari)

Clicking view answer displays the OP and the selected answer.

I expected the answer to be focused - like a link that goes to a particular reply - and all other posts (bar OP) hidden.

When in that view how about continuing to displaying the red button but with the text "View all" so there is an obvious way back?

[Edit: I now see you have a header at the top of the answer post but eyes are not there after reading answer post]

Well, fair comment but eyes are not there after reading the post and visually I would expect this to be a toggle in the same place as the button I used to get here. Not a problem, just feedback.

Does the feature allow the OP to set more than one response as an answer?

Will the notification system notify me if a thread has been 'answered'?

Will the forum thread list highlight threads as having answers?

Does it do anything to the thread title so that when Google picks it up the thread flags as having answers on it?

Yes.

DonGould: Will the notification system notify me if a thread has been 'answered'?

I am thinking that perhaps a notification might be sent. Again, let's see feedback on this.

DonGould: Will the forum thread list highlight threads as having answers?

Already does, with a subtle link. Might change to a check mark though to make it more visible.

DonGould: Does it do anything to the thread title so that when Google picks it up the thread flags as having answers on it?

It doesn't change the title. Actually both Single Page View and Answer View have robots directive to avoid indexing. Canonical tags are correctly set so we could change this at any moment.

Great feature!

One question: are answers searchable? That is, can you search for a string of text including an answer reference?

e.g. "Windows 7 error blahblahblah answer"

I'm also seeing the "Set Answer" button in a topic I created, but I'm not a trusted user, only a subscriber.

Is that intentional?

Yes. You're the OP and are therefore in the list that MF posted above :)
