Im having the exact same issue noted in this thread by a lot of 2degrees customers, got a Samsung Galaxy S1
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=87281&page_no=1

I am on Vodafone, have been since 2007.  My handset is a proper vodafone handset purchased from JB HiFi not a parallel import.  Every so often it looses its signal and displays emergency calls only, I do a lot of driving and seems to happen regularly and mostly I noticed it happening when the phone has been in a weak signal area or no signal at all.  When moved back into strong signal it just never picks up the signal again.  Very annoying and I have lost a bit of work because I rely on my phone to receive jobs, I have to reboot to get signal again and then have all these voice messages come in and free who called txt's.  Im ready just to throw this phone away and change back to my old 2005 nokia with green screen, that old phone never had any problems and had been dropped countless times and generally given a hard time and still worked fine.

model : GT-I9000
firmware version: 2.3.3

If you're not using data much or don't mind slow data, try changing the phone so it only uses the 2g network.

It is found somewhere like - Settings> Wireless and Network > Mobile network
Then set it to GSM only.

Give that a go and see how it works.

Also in the same menu set, try to change your network preferences. I have gsm/wcdma (auto mode), wcdma only, gsm only, or GSM/WCDMA (wcdma preferred). try to switch between auto mode and wcdma preferred mode and see if it helps.

This emergency calls problem really annoys me.

It's not to do with the phone as I have personally seen it happen on many different handsets. It's been occurring for about 6 months at least.

I switched away from Vodafone yesterday to Telecom after nearly 14 years as a customer. (11 of those on account).

Try updating your firmware. 2.3.3 is old. Samsung have official firmware for the S1 on 2.3.6 now.
If kies doesn't give you an upgrade look on xda forums for how to download JW4 firmware manually. Its a couple of months old now was released in Europe/UK but maybe not here.

I've seen this issue on the iPhone and a number of other phones. Do they all have shoddy firmware? Surely a network issue.

The issue with the iPhone losing service was an iOS issue, not a network one. it happened on a huge number of dual mode networks around the world (GSM+WCDMA)

Was an iOS issue? It still happens with an iPhone 4 with latest software installed.

Same issue on Galaxy S.

Same on another android phone my friend has.

I guess they are all faulty phones and the network just works fine?

When lots of other phones don't suffer the issue you have to ask yourself - is a network issue or a handset/software issue?

Apple write horrible RF/baseband software and had plenty of issues in the past that they've had to fix. They also seemed to spend a lot of time trying to get their fast dormancy working and I suspect many of the issues are still related to this.

I am not convinced. It happens on many different phones, manufactured by different companies. It is a common theme of discussion amongst friends who get sick of missing calls and rebooting their phones.

Wish it would happen on my SGII, If a handset leaves Vodafone coverage it could camp on another carriers cell and go into this state,

Caldazar How easy is this to replicate?

I can't replicate it at will. It just happens every week or so at different times. Generally while on the north shore around birkenhead, birkdale and beachhaven areas.

I get something very similar on the Samsung Galaxy SII. The phone will often report it is working fine and has good coverage but inbound calls just go streight to vm. Sometime it will come right by itself but usually I have to reboot the phone

I also see this often on my iPhone 4S around the shore 5.1.1 firmware not jail broken at times it will loose all signal and i have tried resetting network settings which doesn't work all you can do is reboot the phone. Once you have rebooted the phone no problems it is very strange.  It is almost like the phone can't see the network at all. All my previous iPhones have had this issue a 3GS and a 4 and now 4S. I did use to notice with my previous smart phones a lot of text messages saying you have missed a call and it never rang and then a voicemail notification and that was a a pair of Nokia N95's. So i don't feel it is phone related but more network. I live on the Shore in Glenfield and work in Newmarket. When i look at the coverage map for my street it says i have excellent 2g 2.5g but marginal 3g and 3g extended yet in reality all are marginal so much so i have the ability to divert calls to my home number free of charge. Just my 2 cents worth.
