Topic # 108039 23-Aug-2012 19:45 Send private message

Hello Fellow Geekzone members!

Tonight I just have a question regarding the Annex M modification to ADSL2+ technology. For those who do not know it is basically a variant of ADSL2+ that allows for a faster upload speed in return for a slightly lower download speed. For me this would be great for things such as Live Streaming and YouTube uploading.

I am currently connected to the Vodafone "Red Network" using the supplied modem EchoLife  HG556a. My question is, is there any way for me to get/use Annex M with Vodafone? I am asking for anyone from Vodafone or anyone who is in a similar situation to me.

I will be giving Vodafone an email to see what they say, but I would be interested in the communities' response. The modem isn't a big deal as I am happy to buy a new modem, however I am curious as to whether anyone has had any luck with Annex M with Vodafone's "Red" network?

Further more if anyone knows of any ISPs that do offer Annex M, whom in which it would be worth getting in contact with.

I thank you for any help/information in advanced.

-Aidan

No and no point calling them as it isn't offered.

Shame really, no annex M, no VDSL. Its like they don't want people contributing to the internet unless they can get UFB, which again is not offered.

A little birdy tells me Voda will be offering some new "things" over the next months.

I'm fairly sure that Slingshot allow Annex M on their LLU equipment or there is always VDSL2.

Yes, Slingshot do appear to support Annex M on their equipment.

I have connected via it myself a few times while doing tasks that required a higher upload speed however I generally find the higher Download speed of standard ADSL2+ to be preferable.

From experience it is possible to connect under Annex M on the Vodafone Red network however the difference is marginal/non-existant to standard ADSL2+.

I got in contact with Slingshot and they do offer Annex M, Although the coverage is limited. And they told me my house is not within the coverage.

Ah, My guess would be that you are connected via a cabinet, Not good for Annex M but could be a good sign for VDSL if you decide to go down that path.

I can't get VDSL on Chorus's network (I have a 13db attenuation apparently), although I'll be waiting to see what Vodafone do ;)

What is the condition of your internal wiring like? Lots of extensions? Filters or master splitter?

Theoretically if cleaning up your internal wiring could put you within the threshold if it is in particularly bad condition.

The test carried out was the external wiring only. The test didn't even include the internal wiring. Although I am currently in Vodafone's "Red Network" and my modem tells me I have a 10.1db attenuation so I am hoping if/when Voda do VDSL I'll be good to go.

We have LLU Business customers now, but only in very specific areas at the moment. Flick me a PM with your customer number and address and I'll have a look to see if it's available for you.
