i haven't been staying up to date on 3g data speeds but from my rough testing it seems vodafone is significantly slower than 2degrees.  i'm getting 1034/112 or something on speedtest android app.  and i was regularly getting over 3 megabit with 2degrees, and over 1 megabit upload.

i know there are some towers that are meant to be 7 megabit, some 14 megabit etc etc.  my phone is only 7 megabit i think.  (googling it says 7.2 megabit HSDPA)  could this be overloaded AP on vodafone with more customers or just that they have older infrastrucutre?

I'm not sure how to go from that to celltower.  But that's way better than my result?!!  My ping was 120 msec too.

So is this tower included?  I wouldn't think it'd be really old technology if it's 3g-only?  Will it get 2g at the same time?  the 2degrees tower is new, i'd just swapped over to vodafone as 2degrees couldn't give any answer on when there may be a tower servicing this area.  a bit late.

Could that be why phone calls are choppy on it too?  It's more noticable when calling vodafone and listening to hold music then during phone calls.  But during talking it can happen too if people talk for too long.

That tower when built was quite difficult to get transmission to and it's a few years old now

ahh ok, whereas 2degrees is new and probably has better backhaul, so it should be possible now to get similar backhaul to 2degrees, or even share capacity maybe?  looks like they're at the same site.

it's not a big issue for this location, i was mostly just curious.  i have wifi, landline etc at home, main reason for data is that if there's a huge big power cut it'd be nice to be able to read about it. (the tornado in auckland recently with power cuts, and a power cut a while back, and both internet connections going down recently starts to remind me about the finicky capacity and lack of redundancy around these days with all the cabinetisation etc.  i also figure if there was ufb the phone would also go down.

If a tornado goes thru a area I don't think redundancy is going to help much

last time there was a power cut here there had been a storm half an hour prior or something.  if there's a problem more in land, places further out can still lose connectivity.  if a tornado actually hit my area i'd be more concerned about my own safety etc and not the net.  but if it's 10km away and still effecting me i'd be more concerned about my net/power :)
