johnr, you really think I would miss such a stupid thing like this? I have been using my Treo 750v for more than six weeks since I came back from the U.S. and the first thing I did on getting off the plane was to change the band selection, of course, otherwise it wouldn't even connect to Vodafone New Zealand.

There's no excuses, the Vodafone network in New Zealand seems to be decaying.

I was not talking about band selection

band Selection and manual network selection are 2 different things

I have worked in the building since it opened and never seen no coverage!!

Down here in CHCH I have noticed my coverage dropping out at times in places that I would normally have full coverage. I first noticed it on monday when I missed several calls with my phone unable to connect. I haven't noticed it again over the last couple of days. Vodaphone weren't doing any maintenence that involved turning off cell sites for a time?

johnr, I was contacted by a Vodafone person today an I now know why this happens. Apparently is not unusual and there's a good reason.

Anybody know what causes 3G phones to occasionally show "no access"? I've now duplicated this using two phones in a friends place in Seatoun Heights (top of the hill above Seatoun). Both phones show 2-3 bars of 3G coverage but you can't make a call or receive a call. After several attempts the network seems to dump the phone off the network with a "no access" and you have to turn it off and on again.

GSM coverage is fine and actually comes from the Boulcott Vodafone site which is at Avalon Park in Lower Hutt - probably 20km away line of sight!
