simon14: How do you get to YouTube on Vodafone Live?
I go to http://m.youtube.com and that works (I have no money left on my phone so I guess it's free).

But you can also go to the vodafone live homepage then to "hot links" then to bebo find somewhere on there where there is a youtube video and click on it, then you are in youtube :)

Yes, going to a non-Vodafone live! domain will be charged unless there's a link from Vodafone live! with a explicit note saying it's not charged.

Treat "advice" from people around forums with caution unless coming from a Vodafone person.

PaulBrislen: Bebo is free on Vodafone Live.

Facebook is free on Vodafone Live.

You Tube clips are free on Vodafone Live.

If you think you've been charged for it, ring 777 and explain it to them. We did have an issue a few weeks ago but that should be resolved so if you ARE able to prove you've been charged, you'll be refunded.

Bebo, Facebook and YouTube are free on Vodafone Live.

Cheers

Paul

Could we have some clarification (and even better a FAQ on Vodafone website) please, in regards to the "walled garden" / the extent of it?

Bebo can potentially link to LOTS of things....  And never does a "warning, you will be charged" box pops up.....

For instance, I can now go to:

Vodafone Live Homepage > Hotlinks > Bebo frontpage (mobile version) > Linkin Park Group through search > Videos > YouTube site > South Park Videos through search.......

On another note, I think I've been charged $0.5 for doing "something" recently in this regard...  I hope Vodafone call center staff knows this policy clearly, otherwise, I face a loooong wait and discussion when I ring up....

Well it may not be thou the vodafone live but it still doesn't cost me anything.
And I have proof Laughing
I have a video that shows my balance (0.08) and then the link I use and then m.youtube and the start of a video (takes a bit as I am in a 2G aria Cry).
(there are some weird things on youtube!! and this was "featured")

Anyway, I have encoded this in divx so you will need something like VLC (or a divx player) to view the video: Right click -> save as...

This doesn't prove anytning It may be that you don't have enough balance now but the charges will come later when you recharge your account. Or may be you are one of those few SIM cards that Vodafone have problems with billing.

Again, only believe something is "free" if it's explicitly stated in the Vodafone live! site or if someone from Vodafone tells you so.

Therein lies the problems of VF linking to outside sites (such as Bebo) from Vodafone Live!

My understanding is that that there is a list of external sites that are zero rated when you use the live.vodafone.com APN so if you access a site that's not in this list via your WAP browser or link to it from another site such as Bebo then you will be charged the usual data charges for viewing this site.

This goes against Vodafone's claim that "everything is free unless we tell you otherwise" but unfortunately there is no easy way for them to control what sites people visit once they leave the walled garden. The only way to avoid this would be to create a redirect that pops up advising you that the site you are going to visit will be charged at your regular data rate and to click on an OK button to continute however this would become extremely annoying.

I have a quick question; if I was to go to Vodafone Live then into Bebo and then into YouTube and then save that YouTube address in my bookmarks on my phone, could I then revisit that saved YouTube URL from my bookmarks with it still being zero rated?

This way, I won?t have to always go through Bebo to get to free YouTube!

Well I'll just never top up my phone then :)

But yea im just saying it's free for me going direct to m.youtube.com or thou the vodafone live page...

And I tried to load a different page like google.com or geekzone, but nether would load, so I don't think I will be charged when I top up.

I've been charged 10c for 10mb of data via Vodafone Live only.

I know it's only 10c but i'd like to know why? I never left Vodafone Live sites, all i did was go to Bebo and then YouTube via V Live!

How about calling customer service, who can look at your account and see which resources you accessed?

The info you've pasted says:

Date: 03 June 2008
Connection: WAP
Charging Plan: Casual Usage Plan
Data Transfered: 10.7985
Charge: $0.10

I just did this and as i suspected, they didn't know what the hell they were talking about!

She told me YouTUbe wasn't free and that external links off VOdafone Live can incure charges.

She said i was lucky i was only charged 10c for 10mb of data as i should have been charged $10 per mb.

They don't know anything.... the whole thing is just useless.

Why can't Vodafone train their CR's so they knwo about these things?

What can my next step be?

The answer would be it depends on what url you are visting.
As sbiddle said a lilttle earlier this type of billing is usually based on url and/or protocol not really the path that was taken to the url. If the url you are using is on a "free list" and you are accessing the url with appropriate protocols then you hopefully wont get billed.

Unfortunately this means that vodafone needs to be aware exactly how the service will flow, especially for free sites outside of their direct control but associated with the vlive site.

This is probably the problem you are having at the moment with your 10c billing... probably some tcp, dns or http not accounted for in the tariff "free list"
