Topic # 22081 16-May-2008 09:08 Send private message

Hi all,

I was reading with interest the new (ish) bundled plans for Vodafone (home phone and 20gig for $90).  I'm with Xtra so this is looking quite attractive.

What has been people's experience with Vodafone as a provider e,g. performance, customer service, etc.?

Thanks.

Customer service poor.
Performance - Good. apart from the 2 weeks just last week where peak times were less than 1mbit.

Customer service is either great or crap. I've had both ends of the spectrum so far. Just depends on who you get through to. That compares to my previous xtra experience which was that they were all pretty crap.

Potential speed is about the same but then I am on a very shoddy telecom exchange so that wasn't likely to change but I'm certain that Vodafone are currently doing less traffic shaping as certain access is easily 3 times quicker than with xtra.

Just to give you an idea of what I mean. My ADSL connection is 7600kb/s down and 830kb/s up but with speedtests the max rates are more like 1600kb/s down and 570kb/s up.

For non web/mail apps on xtra I was quite used to max speeds of more like 400kb/s but now it's more like 1200kb/s.

Of course milage may vary.

Customer Service - Poor
Broadband quality - Good
Noticed a small increase in speed after changing from xtra, Glendowie exchange about 3km away getting 3.5mbits
You will be happy with the performance but you better hope you never have to deal with the customer service reps otherwise you will end up pulling out you hair.

I've recently (this month in fact) switched away from vodafone broadband (after a couple of years). I noticed significant slow downs since the takeover of ihug. And the helpdesk wait times became unacceptable.

I'm on home phone and the new Ultimate pack.

Customer service - well, good for simple things, but if you're really serious, do stuff online or by person. Hold times are only reasonable during off peak times.

Speed - well just see this!

Thanks for your replies ... I decided to take the plunge and moved to the Ultimate pack.

Phone and broadband was switched over last night (which I didn't find out until the connection to Xtra stopped working!) and speeds have been fantastic. Much, much faster than Xtra ... so far so good.

I don't seem to have been sent any set up info, so another couple of questions ... is there an online usage monitor and what are the POP3 / SMPT addresses?

Thanks.

pop3: pop.ihug.co.nz
smtp: smtp.ihug.co.nz

There is a meter on their website, however there is also a 3rd party usage meter that works very well.... soon as I find where I put it, Ill put it on my site for you.

what sort of speeds are you receiving?

Speeds with Xtra were in the 2.5 - 3 mbps range. After the change, we're getting 3.5 - 4.0. What has been really good is international speeds, I did a speedtest to LA and I was getting about 2.5 mbps ... with Xtra we would never reach 1 mbps.

We're semi rural so more than 2km from the exchange.

So not bad really ... even my wife has noticed the difference!!

Their peak isnt as reliable as some, they force interleaving so higher latency but that's made up for in the dirt cheap deal that they offer, which i must say is very good.

(though telstra's more consistant, abeit more expensive)
