Hi folks. Long time lurker, first time poster. Be gentle.

I signed up to the Vodafone Ultimate plan several months ago, and have generally been satisfied with the service, but I always felt that the speed (sync rate) was lacking. My line rate is currently 2900Kbps down and 900Kbps up. I've lived closer to the exchange in my area and achieved a line rate of between 3000-4000Kbps. I'm now roughly 1.5km from the exchange. I've noticed that many other users have reported speeds of up to 20,000Kbps (and higher), and I wanted to gauge if my experience is typical, or if I should do some investigating. There [apparently is not] a local cabinet installed in my area, which suggests I should be getting a much better speed than I am. Here is a simple cut 'n paste from the modem:

I've recently requested that interleaving be turned off, but I'm sure that isn't causing a slow line rate. In fact, it's actually increased since I had it turned off, though I'm sure for unrelated reasons.

I live in the Auckland, Torbay/Long Bay area. I'm not sure what the decorum or sensibility is on posting addresses, so I'll leave out the telecomwholesale.co.nz link for now, unless you need that to help diagnose the possible issue. Is it possible I'm not connected to the cabinet? Is the cabinet causing interference? Any advice much appreciated.

EDIT: It just oocurred to me to paste a speedtest.net link.

When copying things from a browser or other programs all editing comes along - try paste into Notepad, then into the editor here.

Hi, firstly welcome to GZ, first question, are you on a voda ULL connection (Red Network) or on a Telecom wholesale connection, this is important.

At first look at your stats, you have 47dB of attenuation, which equates to 3.4km of cable. You state you are 1.5km from the exchange so one would possibly suggest there should be less cable, but this is an unknown. The attenuation result (and speed) can be made worse than it is by bad connections, incorrect filtering and mid span injection, this last one relates to the situation when your address is on a cabinet but you are on a ULL (Red network) connection fed from the exchange rather than the cabinet.

If you are within 2km of an exchange then you are not likely to be on a cabinet, but again this is currently unknown. If the telecomwholesale map states your in a active cabnieted area then you should be on that unless you are on the red network, in which case changing back to a non red network connection should get your speed back.

Thanks Cyril. I spoke with technical support this morning, and they seemed rather avoidant of the question and situation. Eventually she offered to get a Telecom technician out at a possible cost of $200 to "check [my] wiring". I believe I'm on the Red Network as I vaguely recall the person that signed me up initially state as much. I'm not 100% sure where my local exchange is, but this website seems to suggest it's quite close.

I've sent you a PM with my address. Should I post it in the body of this thread, or is that generally not recommended?

Hi, your area is not to be cabnetised for another 12months, so it would seem that your attenuation may well be true. I would suggest that you do a simple isolation test to see if there are any unfilted devices (or faulty filters) in you home this includes anything connected to the phone line including sky boxs, fax machines etc etc.

You may well be advised to also limit your modem back to ADSL1 and see that improves things.

Edit: have located the exchange as per your link and would guestimate that 47dB is probably about right.

Thanks very much, Cyril. I was quite daft when I checked the wholesale website. I'll perform the isolation test and replace filters as a precaution.

So I guess it's still another year to go before I get to brag about having 20Mb download speeds? ;)

Hi, yes it appears as though its 12months away, however in some areas they are a good 3-4months ahead of schedule, so dont be surprised.

The ideal isolation test is to connect to the line at the demarc or the first socket closest the demarc with the line ongoing to the rest of the house disconnected, ie try and pull as much of the house wiring out of circuit. I would not replace filters without you proving they are not doing as expected. The ideal solution is a central filter with a dedicated DSL port, but this can cost anything up to $200 depending on who does it.
