galenking: Good to get confirmation that this is not just me or my device. iPhone 4 over past few days in Nelson region. Frustrating.

I don't now if this is the same issue with the Iphone, I have downgraded my 3GS to Firmware 3xx, 4.0 etc etc and the problems with the network loss and text stalling only happens from 4.01 onwards. That appears to be a firmware issue.

But if it's an iPhone firmware issue, why it is happening to people who are using handsets from a different manufacturer?

The problem with iPhone 4.1 is that the data session is constantly on even on sleep mode. So when you are in a poor signal area, that can cause iPhone data session to stall. That doesn't happen on XT. Because I can still make calls even when signal drops below -113 on XT. It is the problem of voda's old technology 2100mhz.

Good to see that I am not the only one having this issue, I was thinking it was the Samsung Galaxy S I just got as I did not notice it much on my Nokia N86.
There have been many time's I have had to resend text's and sometimes they will go other times I give up and put the phone into flight mode and out again and it fixed the issue.
Likewise with the Data it will just randomly stops.

My Mother also has the problem with texts not going and I just thought it was something she was doing wrong as she only gets 2g on her phone as it does not do 900MHZ WCDMA.

Last time I bought up a Vodafone issue on Geekzone http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=40&TopicId=58420  Paul said that we complain too much and blaimed it on the Iphone http://www.nzherald.co.nz/technology/news/article.cfm?c_id=5&objectid=10631583.

Lets see what there response is this time.

harrylin: MiFi is a MiFi from novatel wireless. It has nothing to do with huawei in 2006 or 2008. .

The point that I was trying to make is that the data stalling problem has been around for years, but it now appears to be affecting a wider range of devices than it used to.

I also have the missed calls issue about once a day or every 2 days. Phone sitting on my desk at work fully charged. Full bars. Get a sms saying missed call from xxx number. Them get voicemail. The other issue i get often is i cannot call xt numbers. Any time during the day ring number and it just goes blank no ringing or anything. Hang up try again. And on the 2nd or 3rd go it works. Dont have issue to cdma, other voda or 2deg numbers just to xt mobiles. And dont have that issue from xt or 2deg sim in same phone.
And my phone is just a "dumb" Nokia 6212 Phone I imported from the UK, so it's not like it's an iPhone or similar smartphone.

2100Mhz is not 'old technology' and has nothing to do with the problem here. The iPhone also has nothing to do with the problem and neither does the 4.1 software. It would be appreciated if you could keep this thread on topic.

-113dBm is also too low to sustain a reliable call or pdp context on any network, no matter what the technology.

Can confirm the failed text on iphone 3GS.

Just get a big red exclamation mark & message saying sending failed.

Interesting that Vodafone obviously dont consider this an issue,, nothing on their network status page for any of the current issues described in this forum.

I have noticed the same issue, on 2degrees roaming on vodafone network. The same problem did not happen whenever I am in Wlgtn. Is this possible?

I agree with the few who have commented the problem of data stalling requiring a restart of the phone or connection has been around for years.

In GPRS days I had it on both phone and fixed cellular terminal and way, way back was really bad some times to the extent it was impossible. When went 3G problem seemed to disappear completely but has come back for me - think I first noticed it again in the Marlborough Sounds back in May (or perhaps even earlier this year) and since at least back then in Kapiti and Seaview Marina (Petone) too - phone is Nokia S60 used as modem and in Sounds I dropped back a few times to the GPRS fixed cellular terminal on the boat with the same result. This always with fine signal strength and with different computers.

May have been imagination but I thought it got worse between 12-1pm and 3pm-4pm :-), especially in GPRS days, so had put it down to if not being my own fault it possibly being a system loading matter (but I am no expert in this stuff except to the extent that I know what the school hours are and out of them every brat, especially bratesses, seems to have a phone stuck in their face :-)).

I don't do many texts so can't comment on them being blocked nor voice calls..

I thought i was the only one some days..  iPhone 4 in Christchurch.  Many many times a day.  And if you don't notice it locking up (unscientific description) and you reboot it or toggle airplane mode two hours later, you get a ton of angry voicemails from customers wanting to get hold of you.  Vodafones response,  HANDSET ERROR....  I'm on my 4th phone, they keep making me change it out.   All my friends and customers that are on XT are having NO ISSUES. so i'm thinking thats where i'm heading.  My ipad has no issues on xt BTW.  :)

Wow! I never noticed this thread until I saw Steve's blog post! Good to see I'm not nuts about or just imagining this frustrating problem - at first I thought it might've been the custom ROM on my Desire doing weird things but it happens in all ROMs and radio versions. I get all of the symptoms on my Desire in Christchurch many times a day.
