I have found a solution to the data problems, at least for me here in Wellington CBD for my nexus one.

I have successfully received no stalling data sessions by changing my apn to vodafones direct apn.

Will keep others posted on my progress.

It makes me wonder if this is an overloading of vodafones standard apn?

Although this could be all coincidence.

Hmm,  I tried all three of vodafones APN in my testing over the past couple of months with my iPhone 4 in Christchurch to no avail.

Now, that said, since this forum has gone ballistic and VF have been giving this top priority I have had no stalling issues on my phone today and yesterday afternoon.  Usually 5 or so a day.  Progress i hope.

So don't keep us in suspense JohnR and others, is this problem fixed?

From reading this thread, it looks like another Geekzone success story - and a good reason why big companies should let their staff participate in these places.

Any technical tidbits?

Since JohnR hasn't responded I have decided that I will take an irresponsible approach and put forward a theory based on pure wild speculation with no factual basis in the hope of provoking a response (shoot down).

This theory is that Vodafone are rolling out a second UMTS carrier in order to increase the bandwidth that they have available for their customers and to facilitate their new 28 Mbps network and that handovers between the two UMTS carriers weren't working correctly.

Whilst I am all for wild specualtion, sadly my problems have been ongoing since 2009... and as of yesterday I was still having missed calls that never rang (with full signal) and data dropouts.

Wonder if that still fits with the 28mbps network? (were they busy on it last year?)

:)

My wild speculation, they are sending their network thru the old ihug mail servers that are delaying things too much ;)

Interesting theory. While I don't know whether it is related I do know that in my own (rather extensive) testing prior to posting about this I experienced issues when the phone was staying connected to a single CellID. Running Celltrak on my phone in a stationary location the CellID remained the same and the issue still occured.

This also wouldn't explain the issue occuring to people in areas that aren't having dual carriers deployed.

OK - my wild speculation is discounted then

Text fails, calls in - rings but fails on answer. Call the person - no connection. Try later, no conection, like nothing happens and yes the number is active, it's my husband's phone, another android.

Browser Connection - no go

Update application - no go

All between 10am - 2pm lower Victoria St West and Victoria St near TVNZ

Texts stalled this afternoon and an alert about a missed call from last night only came through this afternoon - coincidentally (?) right after texts started working again.

A SMS to update Twitter was sent at 1.03pm, arrived 2.48pm.

Twitter being slow affects me with no data on the handset, so I would say is independant of this issue.

Perhaps, but I gave info about the SMS I sent to Twitter because thats the only message I know for certain was delivered and for which I have both the time sent and time it was delivered. I sent other messages around the same time that were not delivered - the ones sent to another Vodafone phone had not been received when I checked around 8pm. During this same window I didn't get any messages.

If nothing else had been affected I'd just blame Twitter ;)

I havn't been having the missed calls issue in the last two days, Monday/Tuesday I locked to GSM and that seemed to fix it.  Then Wednesday Thursday post updates from Rhys I've found that when on dual mode I havn't been missing calls.

The SMS Delay however I have noticed, Sent a message from the Telecom SMS gateway, and it was delayed by 40 mins from arriving on my Voda mobile.  But natually turned up straight away on my CDMA and XT Test phones.

Check out my Mobile Cell Site Google Maps KML Files in my blog.
Now using Google Fusion Tables or Address Lookup or GPS using Smartphone
I update it on a monthly basis automatically from RSM.
