I have a customer that has a static IP Address on their Vodafone ADSL connection (business customer). Is it possible to change the the PTR record for this IP Address to something we define rather than "UNASSIGNED.static.cust.vf.net.nz." ?

I tried calling the customer service team but they didn't get what I wanted done.

I am trying to confirm if this is even offered by Vodafone / ihug.

Important if you're running a mail server or similar that does reverse dns lookups.

haha I could just imagine the normal BB help desk knowing what a PTR record is :). Pretty lol it costs $20 a month on VF for a static IP too.

Just call up and them to make the reverse dns record hostname.domain.co.nz

If they don't understand ask them to pass it on to level 2. I have had no issues making these requests of VF in the last 12 months.

Correct if you call and the rep is not sure ask them to log a ticket with your query and ask the rep for the ticket number so it can be tracked

We had the same issue with our mail server being blacklisted for not having a valid reverse DNS address. We sent an email to domains at vodafone dot co dot nz and they were very helpful, however they charged us $49.95 for the privelege!

It takes all of 5 minutes to change. I have servers in the US and they make this change for free but admittedly it does take around  a day to process with them.

About a day sounds pretty average for TTL on RDNS zones in DNS (or two days, depends how they want to play it).  I know the server provider I'm with it takes about a day, though the change is instant.  And my ISP also does this change for no charge as well with the same caveats (TTL etc).

Snap include a Static IP on their business packages, and will change your PTR at no charge.

So that's an option if you have trouble getting Vodafone to do it.

Just to confirm vodafone sorted this for no charge (or as part of the service given we pay for the static IP). In the end it was quickly(less than 48 hours) dealt with once I managed to get the case logged (maybe John pushed it along) but either way happy now.

Only issue was the first time I contacted vodafone CS they didn't know what I was talking about and I didn't force the issue to log a case so I had a reference number.
