as friend has bought a secondhand phone off trademe.. as yet to pick up

the seller said they are leaving nz, selling phone, was bought 3 months ago on contract with vodafone.

My question is. if the contract had a phone discount, and she sells the phone, is the new owner liable for any money owing to vodafone ?

Or is the selling still liable for any money owing attached to her contract.

sorry if its not clear best way I can word it.

thanks cheers

Is the friend taking over the contract, or just purchasing the phone?

If the current owner doesn't pay up the disconnection fee then anything can happen. Telecom blocks the handset for example...

The contract is with the end user, If the handset was obtained by fraud then the IMEI could be blacklisted

seller said she got the iphone when signed up for contract, now going overseas and doesn't want to take the phone.

I have got my friend to ask what she plans to do with her contract?

Don't want her to buy a iphone that doesn't work

The big question here is: What is Vodafone's process when a customer reneges on a contract. Do they do anything to the customers handset such as blacklist it? If so, then your friend needs to be very careful.

But is it fraud if the seller advised she purchased the phone with a contract,

She has advise she is giving the sim (and therefore contract) to her cousin. OMG getting worse and worse lol Hoping the cousin will continue to pay for contract I am amusing.

Now really wondering how many of these contract phones are resold on trademe before the contract is up.

Ah! I was wondering how a phone on contract could be fraudulent.

I have a Noka E51 sitting in the drawer here that was bought from Trademe which was blacklisted 3 months after I bought it.... It sucks to be the purchaser. I just buy my phones from the retail channel now...

Not naming names, but one of the stores in our building at work bought a bulk lot ($50k worth) of iPhone 4s after they came out last year. Ended up that they were all bought using stolen credit cards by a foreigner who fled the country. They only found out after they had sold them all and all came back after being blacklisted. Buyer beware!

There have been a number of threads on here in recent months started by people who have found their phone works only on 2degrees, and not VF or XT. Some have purchased phones on Trademe from sellers who have clerly marked their phones as only working on 2degrees - why? Because 2degrees don't block handsets, while both Vodafone and Telecom share this data.

I thought about doing this for about 3 seconds when I realised what had happened but it would be a very crappy thing to do....
