Hi there,

I'm just wondering if voip works on vodafone naked plans?

My current hardware is a Dynalink RTA1025W, I also have a Vodafone complete modem router. Would either of these devices work on Vodafone? Assuming they do I guessing I would need to buy a handset? Then how do you go about getting a phone number?

Cheers

Yep VOIP works well on Vodafone naked - I've just completed porting my POTS number to VOIP and I am very pleased with the result.

You need a couple of things.

1) An account with a VOIP provider - these guys give you a phone number or will port your existing POTS number. World Exchange/Xnet and 2talk seem to be the two main providers. There is a certain amount of debate about which is superior. Most people on this forum acknowledge that World Exchange/Xnet have better support and probably a better back of house system but they are more expensive and don't have the range of dashboard features that 2talk do. I've gone for 2talk but a lot of people seem to have been let down by their service (or lack of).

2) Some form of device to terminate the VOIP call. This could be a combined modem/router/ATA, a standalone ATA, a VOIP handset or a smartphone running a SIP client. I've gone for a standalone ATA which I've integrated into my existing house wiring. Really depends on what you are willing to invest.

If you use the search tool on geekzone you'll find lots more information.

You don't actually need any more hardware than you have got. You can enable the VOIP on the Vodafone Complete modem. Then you plug a standard corded or cordless phone into the Phone/Fax port on the back of the modem.

2talk instructions are here:

VFX (World Exchange) instructions are here:

They are the main two VOIP providers in NZ. 2talk has a free line option which is great for testing this sort of stuff.

Cheers, Matt.

+1 I also wish that I had known this when I went down to Nelson at Christmas and set my parents up on 2talk as I bought them a SPA2012 to use on their broadband connection
