Topic # 111364 31-Oct-2012 18:00 Send private message

I'm planning to move over to Snap naked VDSL in the coming weeks. I've been dredging through the forums for options to setup with the Fritz!Box. Aside from defaulting to Snap Plus it seems the only viable options are VFX and 2talk.

I've been looking at pros/cons of each and it seems to be:

2talk Personal - http://www.2talk.co.nz/personal
$23 porting fee
No location details for 111 calls
Auto record of calls etc
Generally more features in the base price
Complaints around service and porting time (seems to be historical though)
No free local calls (but heaps of local minutes in $10 plan)

Open VFX - http://www.xnet.co.nz/phone/voip-phone-line-vfx
$20 porting fee
Less fancy features
Free local calling
Ability to update 111 location database through self service
Overall slightly more expensive depending on your call habits

Is there anyone else to add or any other benefits/pitfalls I should be aware of choosing between them?

2Talk is great as ling as you are happy looking after it yourself and not expect much support. Their ticket system works fine but some people don't like it. And you can have a local number on 2talk. It will cost $6.90/month if you go on the 'free' plan or you can geta free local number on the other plans. Never had any issues with them and the service itself seems solid.
VFX is great if you want support, obviously there is less support with Open VFX but still head and shoulders above what you will get from 2Talk. if you aren't too tech savy on VoIP stuff you could go for certified VFX, just means you won't be able to use the fritz's built in ATA.

If you're going to deal with 2Talk then deal with a reseller and your support problem is fixed.

Does adding an extra layer of handling really improve support?

Depends what the question is.

If it's something basic like 'how do I set up x' then yes.

If it's something more complex that does need someone in tech to look at then also yes as it can mean a better quality question is asked and the answer that comes back can be better explained.

Thanks guys.. I'm not that familiar with SIP itself but to me it's just another protocol to learn. The only tech support I probably need is basic settings. I have a telco/ISP background so everything else I can probably RTFM or ask some of the pros here.

I like the look of 2talk for price and the geek in me likes all the knobs to twiddle on their self service portal (have signed up for the free account and trying it with 3CX on my iPhone).

But, I am also thinking the 111 location thing is actually a pretty handy feature from VFX. I guess realistically I can probably have both setup on the Fritz!Box and can always port our landline between them if I want.

There are all the providers who will provision over a private connection too such as Callplus, Telstra etc.

im on Snap Voip through the Fritxbox and i wished i moved earlier. It's my first time using voip and the fritxbox is amazing . I get an answer phone which sends me an email when theres a message , call waiting, caller id all free and the Fritzbox is amazing at keeping records of calls made , missed and answered and a phone book where i put the numbers i want to keep. I know to most people this is common place but im amazed what i can do with Voip .

This whole 2talk support is bad is getting a bit old. It has been very good lately and porting numbers after a I get a date I can then usually get that brought forward and completed in 24hrs. Just call them up if there is any issues or you want a number ported earlier and there is usually no issues.

Agree. Been on italk for a few years now. Never had any issues.

$11 per month, 500 free minutes to anywhere in New Zealand and about 40 other countries. Use it all the time to keep in contact with family and friends in South Africa and Australia.

Personally I use 2talk here at work as im a reseller. How ever i have italk at home for many years and in the last 6 months support has really picked up. Apart from no Auto-provision italk is fine.

Thanks for the info all..

Ended up going with 2talk because of the marginally better mobile rates and call recording. I also like the level of customisation you can do through their portal (even if it is mega ugly UI wise).

My number ports out on Tuesday AM which will be within 5 working days. I got a near instant RFS date back so happy so far. Testing with the free account seemed pretty good on wifi/ADSL with 3CX on my phone so should only get better using the Fritz!Box as an ATA over VDSL.

Number ported to 2talk this morning with no problems. Got an email at 9am advising they'd pre-provisioned so I quickly topped up my account and set it up. Port went through about 10am and all inbound calls have tested ok so far. Well pleased :)
