i may have jumped the gun a bit here... i could have sworn the microsoft guys told me it was coming last year but this article points towards "beginning of 2009" and D-Link is calling for partners to be specially trained before they can sell the kit:

It will be available from April in NZ. We'll be testing the hardware over the next few days.

Just to keep this topic going..

I have a demo D-Link Response Point system here at home to have a play with.

My initial thoughts are very good indeed. Under 15 mins from unpacking the boxes and I have a working PBX with 2 phones registered and a trunk connected to my trixbox system home here.

Configuration and setup is dead simple - people will argue all day whether that's a good thing or not but it's obvious a huge amount of work has been put into making this system as simple as possible.

Dislikes? So far my only complaint is having to dial 9 to get out - dialplans should be created to this isn't necessary. In the old analogue PBX days days they were necessary - now they're not.

Voice recognition is very cool. Press the RP button on the phone and say a users name and it calls their extension.

More to come later when I've had a bit more of a play..

I've spent a chunk of time with the Response Point system and there a number of frustraing limitations in the current SP2 release, but I think most of those issues will be solved in the version 2.0 release which should be available in the first half of 2010.

It certainly is very limited in terms of features but IMHO does do the basic stuff very well. For a small PBX with maybe 10 handsets max who don't require anything but the basic PBX features it does seem like it has a place in the market.

What issues have you encountered?

You're spot on - its a great system at much the basic stuff (and some advanced stuff too) - just limited in specific features. The first issue we hit that everyone we've surveyed about their phone system expects is 'Call Pickup' - the ability for anyone to pickup someone else's phone when it's ringing (and that person is away or busy). It seems that every little legacy keyphone system has this function.

There are some ways to work around this, but we're looking forward to version 2.0 solving this. What has been clarified for us yet is if basestations and handsets purchased now will be upgradable to v2. There was some speculation that new hardware may be required.

After Steve's post earlier, I had a look at some US sites to see what Response Point was all about. It certainly looks a dream to get going compared to some PBXs I have had experience with.

It was disappointing however to see that Remote Branch Offices were not supported i.e. all extensions had to be on the same subnet. I was involved in configuring a system that successfully traversed NAT at both ends and enabled the Remote Extensions to be part of a Hunt Group just as though they were in the same office as the other extensions. It's disappointing to see that this wasn't supported.

The other unpleasant surprise was the price: US$2000 for a system with 5 extensions.

Given the typical reseller margins in NZ, as well as importing costs, I would expect the RRP to be in excess of $4000 for a system with 5 extensions.

Is there any indication of what the price has been set at for the D-Link kit?

It does have VPN support built in.

As for remote extensions this is getting a bit beyond the feature set and to be honest doesn't really need to be part of the phone system itself. Creating a large flat network across multiple sites is easily done with other hardware (using RouterOS as an example) which means the phones can easily be plugged in across multiple sites.

I just don't like the proprietory handsets - but that's how you make a system simple..
