Hi guys

Been looking around for a while now for a good sip trunk provider to use with an asterisk server for our business phone lines. To my knowledge it is better to have an IAX2 trunk when using asterisk. If anyone knows of a provider in NZ that provides this service and is reliable with good quality then please let me know.

2talk offer IAX trunks. There are possibly others but I'm not aware of anybody else offering IAX with pricing that's close to what 2 talk offer.

There are pros and cons of IAX over SIP. It transverses NAT firewalls easier and uses less bandwidth since it's using a single port.

Disadvantages include the fact it can't do a REINVITE like SIP can so all RTP traffic needs to pass through the server. Asterisk doesn't support this well with SIP anyway so that wouldn't be an issue for you.

Do you know if 2talk offer porting of phone numbers and if they do, do they charge monthly for it?

Yeah its a once-off for the number port cost, then a generic $7 per-month for a number, or potentially bundled with the likes of their Business plans. They don't differentiate between their SIP or IAX2 service, so you can chop & change between them at will :)

If you ask 2talk, the official word is their IAX2 service is still "beta", but I've been testing it for months and it's been pretty rock solid, and they know that too!
