We have a problem with going over our data cap. The major issue I have is that we went from our previous provider that we were with for 4 years, using an average of 40 - 50gb a month ... we changed to Telstra 2 months ago and already we have gone over both months hitting 80gb both times !!! I manage our network with a very good understanding of whats connected etc, so I am not looking for advise as to what internally might be using the data. The issue is why when we changed to Telstra did the data usage go through the roof, and what are my chances of getting out of the 12 month contract I got sold stating " 60gb will be more than enough if you were only using 40 - 50gb"

Need more information to comment really. Are you an ADSL customer, or did you come from ADSL to Cable? Who was your previous provider? Did they have free zone content that you're still using, that's not in the Telstra free zone? As for contract exit. No chance. I'm sure they'll let you upgrade to a bigger plan so you're not paying overage, but no. You told them that you were using 40gb, and I agree that 60gb is more than enough if that's what you were actually doing. In my view, you don't have any case against the sales team based on what you've told us so far, but I'm interested to know why your data has jumped 50%. Also, are you using the firefox plug in that lets you keep good track of your data usage? Promote New Zealand - Get yourself a .kiwi.nz domain name!!! Check out mine - i.am.a.can.do.kiwi.nz

You might not be looking for "advise as to what internally might be using the data" but that is where the problem is. Just by changing from a different provider (which was?) to Telstra will not magically increase your usage by 20-30gb. There are other things to consider here, for example there was quite possibly some zero rated traffic that you had on your old isp that you know longer have, and which is now accounting for that extra usage. Good candidates might be - isky (not free on TCL) - game hosting (I got stung here as a borders PS3 hosts all the time now as we are cable and deemed best host) - TV 1 and 2 ondemand (again not free but TV3 is) Usage may not have changed but what billed for may have.

Torrenting? From ADSL at 1mbps (is it that high or less?) to TelstraClear it 2mbps up isn't it? If you haven't throttled it down it would upload faster. the only way you might get out of the contract is if the TCL usage meter is borked. As others have said, there ar eplenty of viable reasons why your usage might change when switching to TCL (unmetering, upload speeds if on cable, diffeent download speeds etc etc), however it is not unknown for usage meters to be wrong. If you are pretty sure it;s not any of the above things, then I suggest you monitor your own network to confirm how much traffic it is using, and see if it comes within a reasonable margin of whatTCL are saying. i.e. if your own modem is reporting 60GB, then it isn't TCLs problem. If your modem is reporting 40GB, well then you MIGHT have a case.

Thank you all, All of you have valid information ... Was with XNET 4 Years averaging 40 - 50gb month No free services I admit we have alot of devices on the network, but our habits or devices have not changed My frustration is purely from the perspective I have changed none of my habits / devices and was hoping to get a faster / higher capped service for less money .... Ironic but the old adage if ain't broke, comes to mind.

It is possible that your old ISP also had you on an old plan, ie National traffic free as some of the older (years ago) plans did have that built in and you may have been lucky to not have the plan changed to their latest pricing. XNet also have akamai/steam caches that you can get free data out of.

Is it possible that Telstra Clear count both upload and download traffic toward your monthly usage and your other provider only measured your downloads?

Have they got you on the right plan? I know time is getting on a bit with this thread. I'm with TC also but on the 40GB all inclusive $80pm thingy. I'm not touching the sides of the plan but in the event I went over my 40GB cap they would automatically sting me another 40GB at a cost of about $40. Could it be that they are stinging you for 2x 40GB stating you have used 80GB? Just a thought, hope you suss it out.

I don't think this is the case, over-usage on the $75 promotion is $2 per additional gig http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/residential/homeplan/packages/broadband.cfm I'm interested in finding what may be the cause though.
