Over the Christmas break my TelstraClear Modem (SB4100) started to play up (going off-line intermittently). I placed a call yesterday and the Helpdesk agreed to replace the cable modem. Trouble is the earliest the technician can come to do this is Sunday.  Being an impatient sort, I find this a long time to wait and be without Internet access. Can I go out and buy my own cable modem?  Is that an option  - or should I seek treatment for my Internet addiction :-)

No you can only use the TCL supplied modem. There is nowhere in NZ you could buy one anyway..

Maybe they could go outside in the freezing cold with a rugby ball and get hypothermia..

The old SB4100's are notoriously inefficient & flakey since major upgrades have been made to the HFC Network in Wellington.
I'd suggest you call 0508888800, go to faults & explain that you old 4100 keep dropping offline

ralphski -Thanks for that info, I had suspected as much and it explains the flakiness I had been experiencing.  The technician came and replaced the modem with the latest model, which is not only smaller, and nicer colour (that was my wife's comment anyway), than the old 4100, it is a 100% more reliable.  Since it was installed, I haven't had any problems and the speeds are noticeably faster.  So, all's well that end's well.

Yeah, That s SB5101. BTW U cant use your own cable MDM, --even if you can get one, coz the MAC address needs to be registered in the network with your IP address. Have fun!

I have a network adapter (not a cable modem), with a simple text box in the config that lets you enter any mac address you want to spoof...
